"Thank you to Mrs. Emmick and one of my students for letting me use their 3D printed mask extender today! My mask was too big & driving me nuts, but my student's creation came in handy!" said Mrs. Higgins.

C3PO & R2D2 Classes at WHS
C3PO (Cross-Curricular Classes Project Outreach) is a project-based learning cohort of classes involving English 10, Chemistry, and World History. We unite for 4 themed units throughout the year to provide students with practical applications of content. We provide many field trips and connections with experts throughout the year. To reach more students as soon as they enter high school, the program has been expanded to include a R2D2 Freshman cohort as well.
The C3PO classes are currently finishing a unit on the Military. Enjoying the nice weather, the class completed several STEM and teamwork activities outdoors, such as a signaling activity, creating a catapult, and engineering strong structures out of paper.
The R2D2 classes are completing their unit on agriculture. They worked collaboratively studying nutrition and food labels and the business of farming, and calculating the yield of corn in a field.
Preparing Future Educators at Washington High School
Beginning with the current 2020-2021 school year, the Washington High School College & Career Academy is piloting a new Education Pathway for students interested in a career in education. Through this curriculum, students have the opportunity to learn about the teaching profession while earning college credit at Vincennes University and Indiana State University.
Taught by Mrs. Lori Hancock, the Education Pathway will include classes in Educational Best Practices, Technology, Special Education, and Developmental Psychology. Students will prepare and teach lesson plans and learn more about learning styles, classroom management, technology in education, education law, and early childhood development.
Mrs. Hancock says that this is her favorite class to teach. “I am thoroughly enjoying teaching this class, I get to see students apply what they are learning.”
WHS Junior Andrea Sandoval, who is interested in becoming a kindergarten teacher, enjoys learning about teaching and how to create lesson plans. “I was surprised to learn how much work goes into creating a lesson plan, and how creative you get to be.” Andrea will be one of the first students to become a cadet teacher in the Education Pathway next year applying her new skills working with elementary students.
The staff at WHS looked at our College & Career Pathway options for students and quickly realized they were missing out on a pathway that is essential to everything else...an Education Pathway. According to WHS Principal Steve Peterson, “Education is the foundation of an advanced society. We need educators to pass on the knowledge...in every field of study”.
WHS developed these classes in part to address the high demand for teachers, both locally and nationally. There is a sense of excitement as they hope some of these students are inspired to enter the educational profession and hopefully return to Washington Community Schools.

Free school meals for Junior/Senior high School students
Washington Community Schools was notified that the USDA has provided schools with COVID-19 relief funds for school meals. These funds will allow ALL students in grades 7th-12th to receive school meals (breakfast and lunch) free of charge, no matter their economic status. Students in K-6th Grade will continue to receive free school meals with no change.
This will begin on Monday, September 14th, 2020, and will continue until December 31st, 2020 or until the USDA communicates that federal funds have been exhausted. WCS will participate in this program for as long as funds allow. When this federally-funded program is discontinued we will notify families of this change.
The USDA has adjusted the COVID-19 relief funds for school meals program to be retroactive until the start of the 2020-2021 school year. All USDA defined school meals (breakfast and lunch) for students in grades 7th-12th that were purchased since the beginning of the school year will be reimbursed. Any extras or a la carte items that were purchased will not be reimbursed. Refunds will be deposited in the student's meal account within the next few weeks.
