Elementary Virtual Distance Learning - What to Expect?
Our goal is to provide information to our families to help smooth the transition to Virtual Distance (VD) Learning. We understand our families need as much clarity as possible to plan for the opening of schools within the virtual environment. We will continue to provide written information in addition to our virtual town hall planned for Monday, August 24, 2020, at 6:00 P.M. Instructions for participation within the virtual town hall will be forthcoming.
Live Session Schedule:
Live Sessions are the times which are scheduled every day to afford the elementary students access to his or her teacher. There are 4-5 scheduled live sessions throughout the day for grades K-6. Live sessions vary slightly by grade level and can be increased based on scheduled small group time and/or teacher access during office hours. The live session schedule includes a daily related arts session (music, library, P.E., and art).
Live Session Defined:
A live session is the time scheduled each day to meet with a teacher virtually. The meetings which will take place through the Google Meet within each Google Classroom serve numerous purposes. The live session can be the lesson, but it will also be the time for interaction, practice, guidance, assistance, etc.. To best understand, imagine a 45 minute brick and mortar class. The teacher delivers a 15 minute lecture on a concept prior to allowing children to work independently. The teacher is circulating throughout the room. After 10 minutes the teacher brings the group back together to review and check for understanding. This microcosm of a brick and mortar class can be virtually recreated. Students and teachers can remain in the Google Meet, like he or she would remain seated at his or her desk while completing work.
Live Sessions = Parent Friendly
We understand the pandemic has taken a toll upon families and students. We are planning, training, and practicing to create virtual distance routines which afford parents the most reasonable experience. The plans and processes following are created with the intention of minimizing the need for parents to be directly involved an therefore further impacted by the pandemic.
Orientation & Teacher Guided:
Our goal in the elementary virtual distance learning environment is to establish routines through live sessions which affords our parents, guardians, and care takers the most favorable home circumstance. We recognize parents are not trained professional educators. To that end, we want to create a virtual distance environment that burdens parents the least. Please don’t misconstrue, we recognize the value of a strong school parent relationship, we are referring to the burden of learning in the home during the pandemic. The live sessions afford the children the opportunity to access his or her teacher throughout the day without being “online” the entire day.
Resource Distributions:
Elementary families will be scheduled to receive resources. Just like in our traditional setting we want the children to have texts, workbooks, novels, and other resources which can be utilized in conjunction with our web based resources.
Schedule and Routine:
The greatest contribution we can ask for from our parents, guardians, and care takers is to ensure your child is following the schedule and routine. Creating a space within the home to engage in the live sessions and complete the corresponding work is beneficial. Student schedules are being refined and will be published prior to the first day of VD school.
