Homecoming at EHS
Homecoming Parade
Varsity Football - Coach Hayden
The Eudora Cardinals took on the Ottawa Cyclones on Friday during homecoming week. The Cardinals won the contest by a score of 35-0.
The score at half was 14-0 in favor of the Cardinals, but the team knows that the score should have been 28-0. A few mistakes in the redzone cost Eudora that opportunity. After halftime, the team came out and played focused, mistake free football. This is the goal every week regardless of the opponent and the score.
Offensively, the Cardinals had 361 rushing yards and 56 passing yards, for a total of 417 yards. The rushing attack averaged 7.4 yards per carry. Jr. Cael Lynch led Eudora with 151 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 17 attempts, an average of 8.8 yards per carry. So. Brayden Beerbower rushed for 123 yards on 16 attempts while Fr. Octavius Lyles chipped in 91 yards on 14 attempts for one touchdown. The Cardinals are averaging 200 yards rushing per game, and have over 1200 yards on the season. The offensive line is a big part of this, as they are becoming a very aggressive run blocking unit. The player of the game is Sr. Brett Neis, who was a good blocker all night. Jr. Zeke Reazin passed for 56 yards on three completions, with Sr. Jake Boucher pulling in two receptions for 45 yards. He had a 3rd reception for a touchdown that was called back by the officials. Sr Sloan Hayden chipped in one reception for 11 yards.
Defensively, the Cardinals were close to perfect all night, except for one drive in the second quarter. The defense is playing fast and aggressive and are starting to figure the game out mentally as well. Ottawa was limited to 46 yards rushing on 26 attempts- an average of 1.7 yards a carry. Getting a shutout on defense is hard no matter who the opponent is, and this is only the second time Ottawa has been shut out all season. The Cards were led in tackles by So. Brayden Beerbower, who had 16 tackles and a forced fumble. Brayden is the defensive player of the game. Sr. Adam Monroe had a big game in his second start, with a big time interception that helped flip the field in the Cardinal’s favor. The Cardinal defense is allowing 19.8 points per game, and improvement from 33 points per game last year.
Sr. Caden Willits was once again great in the kicking game, going 100% from PAT and also causing an Ottawa fumble on a kickoff. The special teams player of the game goes to Adam Monroe, for giving great effort on every special team he plays.
The Cardinals are getting better each game and know that they must continue to improve. They travel to Paola this Friday and are excited about the challenge of taking on the #2 team in the state.

Comments:
We ran just good enough to edge out McLouth and earn a second place team trophy today. Most of the guys didn’t run terrible today, but it definitely looked like we were just a little off our game today. An early Saturday morning race the day after a late night school dance can be an interesting combination as its hard to race fast when you are not preparing the same way you normally would the day before a race. Sophomore Traeger Rader ran an outstanding race today at one point in the first half of the race ran right up on the heels of Cody. Traeger continues to have himself a standout sophomore year and we look to him to keep improving the rest of the season. Next week we will need to run better as we have the league meet on Thursday and many of the schools in our regional are league schools.

We were really pleased with the performance of the JV boys team today. Senior Hayden Miller again led the way for this group and nearly pulled off the win. He did get an even better prize today as his performance will move him up to the varsity team for the league meet next week. Micah Katzenmeier had the race of the day for the boy’s team. Micah was in a pack of runners around 12th place with a little over 1000m to go in the race and he had a great finish moving up all the way to 7th and getting a medal in the top 10. In addition Micah’s time makes him our most improved boy this week. In addition to another freshman boy, Aidan Miller running a personal best today all the other boys in this race ran very near their season best times today. All around, a great job for this group today.

We had planned on running our top 3 JV girls in the varsity race today but when we arrived on site we were presented with the option of entering a full JV team into the varsity race. We ended up with a JV team of 6 girls to run with the varsity team today. And, as we expected, those girls can hold their own in a varsity race as they finished 3rd overall. Like the boy’s races, we didn’t expect our best times of the year to happen here on these hills and the morning after homecoming. That said, we expected to compete hard. Our varsity girls placed all 7 in the top 10 today! Leading the way were sisters Riley and Reagan Hiebert finishing in 1st and 2nd. Reagan chased down the 2nd place girl in the last 600m with 1 shoe. Reagan also had a fantastic race from the viewpoint of the time gap between her and Riley at the finish of only 9 seconds - the smallest that has been all season. Not to be outdone, Kate Erpelding ran the last 1200m with only 1 shoe and outkicked a girl from Basehor to finish 5th. Today, our #3 - #7 runners ran very well as a pack. They were patient early and then just kept picking off girls
from other schools throughout the race. After about 1000m we had 2 girls in the top 10 but ended with all 7 varsity in the top 10.

Comments:
Our JV girls got the morning started with a convincing win despite not having 6 JV girls who were running up in the varsity race. In 5 of our 6 meets we have attended JV team scores have been kept and in those 5 meets our JV girls are undefeated! Today, Ashley Metcalf took her turn winning the JV race - the 4th different Eudora girl to do that this season. For Ashley, it was a well run race, leading from start to finish. In the second half of the race she was able to push her lead out to about 100m and hold that to the finish. All of the girls we had in the race either ran small season best times or were within about 10 seconds of the season best times. Truly a great performance by this group of girls. We took 6 of the top 10 medal spots as well. Junior exchange students from Spain, Ines Camilleri, had her best race of the season by far today running a nearly 3 minute personal best time. Ines has the best attitude and always runs with a smile while she is racing and we are so happy to see her have such a great race.
Up Next:
We will race Thursday October 17th at the Frontier League meet. This year’s meet is hosted by
Tonganoxie and will be run on the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. For many on the team, this will be the last race of the season as after the league meet we are only allowed to race our top 7 varsity team the rest of the way.
Varsity Volleyball - Coach Cleveland
Right off the bat, the Cards competed against two tough ranked teams in the eastern part of the state. First up was Basehor-Linwood. The Cardinals competed against Basehor in the early part of their season, and unfortunately for the Cards, Basehor's fast offense was a little too much for EHS to handle. We lost the in two sets, 18-25, 11-25. Next up for the Cardinals was Gardner-Edgerton. The first set of the match was an exciting one! The Cards did an awesome job of keeping the Trailblazer offense out of system with aggressive serving from sophomore Emma Durr. Our back-row defense really started to pick up in the second match of the morning as well. The Cards took the first set 25-18. The second set of the match, the Cards came out with much of the same fire in the first set. We established a nice point spread with Gardner and lead most of the match. It was a bummer, a few key plays got away from us and we lost set two 23-25. On to set three, the Cards struggled making a lot of simple plays and lost set three 9-25.
The third match of the morning was against a former league foe, De Soto. For the last few years, the Cards had struggled against the Wildcats with a few of our matches leaving us in heartbreak, not this time!!! The Cards beat De Soto in three sets, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18. It was an awesome win for the Cards! The last match of the morning pool play was against Tonganoxie. It was a great match for the Cardinal's offense. Several girls had great touches on the ball and served aggressively. The Cards won in two sets, 25-18, 25-11.
After a short lunch break, the Cards competed in their last match of the day, a battling for 5th place vs Mill Valley. First set, the Cards were on a roll! Our serve receive passing and back-row defense was stellar! Leading the way for the Cards was senior libero Delaney Franklin and defensive specialists senior Mia Manley and sophomore Harper Schreiner. These three ladies, helped setter Emma Durr out tremendously! In return, Emma was able to get our offense rolling! The Cards won the first set, 25-19. The last two sets of the match were unsuccessful for the Cards. In the end, the Cardinals struggled to stop Mill Valley's offense. The Cards lost the second and third set 15-25, 12-25.
Overall, the Cards finished the day with two wins and three losses. It was a great day of competition and the girls played hard! Please join us on Tuesday for our Cancer Awareness Night!!! The EHS Volleyball Team will be hosting their 6th annual Cancer Awareness Night! It is Breast Cancer Awareness month! To support this initiative, The Lady Cards will be hosting Cancer Awareness Night to raise awareness and funds to donate to the local community and community members currently battling cancer.
Please come out and support the volleyball teams and a great cause! We will be selling Walking Tacos and Baked Goods. Several businesses in Eudora and Lawrence have made several donations to help with our raffle and silent auction. We will also be hosting a serving contest between the JV and Varsity match. Don't forget to wear your Pink!!!

On Saturday, the freshmen traveled to Piper High School for the Frontier League Tournament. They came out strong against Louisburg, but had to beat them in three sets 25-15, 19-25, 15-8. The next match was a little more impressive against Tonganoxie! The ladies won 25-18 and 25-20. Sophia Sanchez played the net well and caught any of over passes that came her way. On serve receive Makenzie Graves did an amazing job with her passes. The next match was against Piper and the girls were ready! A lot of our practices consist of me teaching the girls what to listen for in the middle of a volley. Addie Woods played the net like a beast. Calls were made and she executed them perfectly. On defense Josie Pickett tracked the other teams hits like a hawk was able to dig up almost everything hit at her. Such a fun game to watch. Moving on to bracket play, the Lady Cards played Ottawa in the semi-finals, and took three sets to beat them, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11. Ottawa has a big middle and some very intimidating servers, but the fight in these girls made it possible for them to pull out the win. Brooklyn Thorne did a great job at the net when we had out of system plays needing picked up. Bree Gabel and Kambry Shockley were put to the test on back row defense and fought hard to protect their court. Our last game of the day was at 5pm against Spring Hill for the championship. Spring Hill was the only other undefeated team in the tournament and they are good! Serving was not in our favor in this match as we only had 11 serves the entire set. Sadly we lost 10-25. In the second set serving was another struggle, but they were able to score 15 points on Spring Hill to make the final set of the day 15-25. Even though the end result wasn't a Championship Win, we are so very proud of how the Freshmen Lady Cardinals played and are VERY pleased with Second place in the Frontier League.
Varsity Soccer - Coach Erpelding
KCC: Last Tuesday night we were able to extend our winning streak to 6 games with a win over perennial 1A-4A power KC Christian by the score of 2-1. I talked to the boys before the game that every game we play counts, even our non-conference games. We dropped a couple last year because of lack of focus and it cost us in the seedings for Regionals.
The boys came out fast and aggressive from the whistle. Will had to make a save early in the game but after that in the first half, our defense shut them down almost completely from even getting a shot off. In the attack, we created a lot of chances and we had several near misses and the ones we put on frame the keeper saved. Until junior Dylan Meier hit an absolute screamer into the back of the net from the right side of the field. Junior Keaton Herron got the assist off of the corner kick play.
We went into the half up 1-0 and at half we asked the boys to stay tight in the back and be creative in the middle and crash on every shot. We felt that the keeper was going to spill one, well we were right! Junior Jace McCormick cut in on his right and hit a great low shot to the right corner of the goal. The keeper made the save but could not completely bring it in. Junior Colby Lawhorn did as we asked and was in like a flash and put the spill away. Great effort goal! We talk to our guys all the time that no matter how you score it all counts the same. So our guys have been goal-hungry as of late and there is usually 1 if not 2 guys around the keeper when the shots are taken. This makes keepers a little nervous because if they do mishandle a ball, we have guys right there to put the ball away. We had a lot of chances in the second half as well. This game really could have been 4 or 5 to 1. But we will take the 2-1 win.
Louisburg: Well the Louisburg game didn't quite end the way we wanted it to go, losing 1-4 was a tough one to swallow but maybe brought us back down to earth a little bit. It was the worst we had played in about three weeks and from what I was told the best they have played in a month. I will say they had a lot to do with us playing poorly because they were playing so well. I was also told the first half was the best they played all year. The second half was much better by us for about 15 minutes but we didn't sustain it the entire half. Not really sure why. We got up 1-0 in the first 10 minutes when Dylan Meier put away a PK. They tied it within the next three minutes. Then went ahead not long after that. In the second half, we made some adjustments which proved to work again for the first 15. We created chances and were the aggressors, but we just didn't finish the game.
Louisburg is a good team no doubt about that. We did not play at our best and that stuff happens. The question now is how will we respond. Will we allow Louisburg to beat us twice or will we get back after it and get it going again the next time out.
We won't be able to win the league but we still have other goals in front of us. We have a chance for a top 4 seed and possibly a top 2 seed if we can win the rest of our games. We look to get back on track on Monday at Heritage Christian at 430 in a Varsity only match.
Heritage Christian: Last night was a very disappointing loss to the hands of Heritage Christian. I told the boys that we couldn't let Louisburg beat us twice, but after thinking about it, I think Louisburg did, through our mental state following last Thursday's loss. I think that played a factor in how we played last night but give Heritage credit, they play very well on their small field and it frustrated us.
From the start, we were not the aggressors and haven't been the last two games. During our win streak we were the aggressors every single game. In the style that we are playing this year, we have to be that way. If not you get what we have looked like the last two games. I'm not saying our effort was poor, the kids were playing hard, but we were not playing together and that is something we had been doing. All of that is on me as it is my job to get these guys prepared to play both physically and mentally. I have not done that the last two games. I have not put these boys in the best position to win.
We got down 0-1 and I thought that would wake us up. It did enough to get us back to 1-1. Senior Caden Willits went on a dribble then found junior Kale Breedlove which hit a laser off the bottom of the crossbar and behind the line for the goal. They made it 1-2 a few minutes later when we had a breakdown in the back. In the second half, we missed a PK to tie and the three rebound chances right in front of the net. They got a PK later on an unfortunate call that I hate but it was a handball. They were able to score, even with a great effort by junior goalkeeper Will Christensen to make it 1-3. We got one back to make it 2-3 when Kale hit a shot that junior Keaton Herron deflected in.
This was another game that we took 30+ shots with 15 on frame to their nine and with five of them on frame and they scored three. It's not like we aren't creating the chances, cause we are. We are just not staying composed in front of the net.
We have two days of practice and we will get things figured out. We have Ottawa at home on Thursday with the JV at 430 and Varsity follows
JV Soccer - Coach Mathern
On Thursday, Oct. 17th, we traveled to Louisburg and got to play the late game under the lights. I could tell the boys were excited and they came ready to play for the first time in a couple games. After giving up an early goal we bounced back almost immediately when Freshman Andrew Gomez had a great pass through someones legs and found junior Abel Felguerez who took a touch and ripped it low and hard. The ball hit the post and then hit the back of the keeper and rolls into the back of the net and tied it 1-1. After the goal we kind of shut down. I don't know if the boys thought that was good enough or what was going on but we stopped communicating lost our shape and got burned because of it. The final score was 1-5 and could have been a lot worse. Thankfully our junior goalkeeper Devin Moncreif had some good 1v1 saves and read the ball really well coming out of his box and clearing the ball a couple different times. JV plays again against Ottawa on Thursday, October 17th, at home, 4:30pm start.
