Pity the Beautiful

Devin Cooley

Main Idea

The main idea of this poem is inner beauty. It talks about pitying the beautiful because in the end, beauty doesn't last. The people who have so much now because of their beauty will have nothing when it's gone. The people who will truly succeed are the ones who are beautiful on the inside.

Why this poem?

I chose this poem, because I feel like a lot of people struggle with inner beauty, especially in high school. People work so hard to be skinny or pretty that they forget to be a decent human being. This poem made me think of that saying "don't judge a book by its cover" and I think that's really important. People need to focus more on their inner beauty than their outer beauty.

Pity the Beautiful- Dana Gioia

Pity the beautiful,

the dolls, and the dishes,

the babes with big daddies

granting their wishes

Pity the pretty boys,

the hunks, and Apollos,

the golden lads whom

success always follows.

The hotties, the knock-outs,

the tens out of ten,

the drop dead gorgeous,

the great leading men.

Pity the faded,

the bloated, the blowzy,

the paunchy Adonis

whose luck's gone lousy.

Pity the gods,

no longer divine.

Pity the night

the stars lose their shine.

The Ultimate Beauty Tutorial

The Beauty in Ugly- Jason Mraz

She's so big hearted

But not so remarkable

Just an ordinary humble girl

Expecting nothing as we're made to think

Its a pretty persons world

But you are beautiful

And you better go show it

So go look again

You gotta be true to your own

If you really wanna go to the top

Do you really wanna win

Don't believe in leaving normal

Just to satisfy demand

We'll if you wanna get free

And if you wanna do the passionate thing

And if you wanna get smart

For the sake of your heart and all

You should own your name

And stand up tall and get real

And see the beauty in ugly

We'll you are fresh

Your face is fabulous

Don't forget you're one of a kind

When nobody's checking the deeds you've done

And nobody's hearing your cries

You make all the fashion statements

Just by dressing up your mind

We'll if you wanna get free

And if you wanna do the passionate thing

And if you wanna get smart

For the sake of your heart and all

You should own your name

And stand up tall and get real

And see the beauty in ugly

And see the beauty in ugly

We'll if you wanna get free

And if you wanna do the passionate thing

And if you wanna get smart

For the sake of your heart and all

You should own your name

And stand up tall and get real

And see the beauty in ugly

And see the beauty in ugly

Song-Poem Connection

I chose the song The Beauty in Ugly because, like the poem, it talks about inner beauty. In the poem, it talks about how being pretty on the outside doesn't necessarily mean you're pretty on the inside. The song talks about how being not so attractive on the outside doesn't have to affect how you are inside. Both the song and the poem hint that its more important to be a better person with out the best looks than to be pretty with a mean heart.

Original Poem- Devin Cooley

The best books

are torn and tattered

not judged by their looks

its the inside that matters

People are tricky

that's something I've gathered

on the outside they're pretty

on the inside they're shattered

Not everyone is corrupt

we all have potential

beauty is nice, but

the heart is essential
