Mrs. Harmons' Philosophy
My goal is to create an environment that is conducive to ALL learners that promotes learning, creativity, self-expression and a safe place that allows them to be themselves! Art promotes problem-solving skills, fine motor skills, artistic expression and overall works to enhance what they learn in their homeroom classes through integrating art history, geography, vocabulary, math skills and writing!
I will be embracing the idea, "Create Art Your Way". I will be teaching themes and techniques to my artists this year and taking an approach that will help aid in their creativity by giving them more choice with their medium and more artistic expression with how they approach the themes and techniques taught.
Our students our going to "Make their Mark in Art" while "Engineering Creative Minds".

What to Wear on Art Day?
WHAT IS MY CHILD LEARNING IN ART?????????
YES, art is fun! YES, art is cute! But, art also teaches us about the world around us, in many, many ways. It is an important part of our lives and our SCHOOL…
Symbolic- Art has meaning! SYMBOLS and pictures are used to share ideas throughout our whole world.
Create- art class teaches us how to share our ideas, by giving us the tools for CREATING.
Helping Hands- We learn how to be HELPFUL members of a community in art class.
Students work together and share ideas every single day.
Other Subjects- We learn about OTHER SUBJECTS in art, as well. We use measuring! We read! We learn about history! We learn about planets, dinosaurs, and the weather! AND SO MUCH MORE!!!
Opportunities for the future- Did you know that employers are more likely to hire people who can think creatively? It’s true! Art gives people tools for the FUTURE.
Many jobs are focused in the art field. Architects, illustrators, teachers, designers…and the list goes on.
Life skills- art teaches many skills, such as coordination and other fine motor skills necessary for LIFE.
So the next time you put that cute, little masterpiece on your refrigerator, think of all the THINKING that went into it J
Flipped Classroom and Choice Based Art
As we embark on a new journey in the art room into the world of Choice-Based Art also known as Teaching for Artistic Behavior, the students and I are very excited! This will allow students to make more choices and use more critical thinking, innovation, creativity and collaboration as they create their art projects this year. They will still learn about a topic/theme from me and watch a few demos and they will be able to choose the approach they take in order to create their art based on what was taught.
For example, if we learned about portraits instead of everyone using sharpies and colored pencils they can choose a photography/technology station, painting station, printing station etc. This helps them learn that there are several ways to solve a problem and in their case several ways to create art but it still be correlated to what everyone else is doing but they just get more say so in how they create it! I am very excited to try this with them this year!
