Nathan Hale Author Visit a HUGE Success!
Graphic novelist, Nathan Hale, visited Canyon Ridge on Oct. 1st and presented to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Mr. Hale is an author and illustrator of historical graphic novels. Students sat spellbound as they watched Nathan Hale illustrate his entire talk. He shared how he became a writer and illustrator by saying YES - saying yes when people asked him to work or do a job, again & again, leading to his opportunity to do a job he loves!
Nathan Hale writes a series of books called Hazardous Tales which focuses on well-known and little-known facts of history. Each story is thoroughly researched and written to appeal to young readers who might not ordinarily pick up a history book!
Students learned about the Louisiana Purchase, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon, Lewis and Clark, Sacajawea & her son Pomp, and York (the only African American to join the expedition). They learned about the effects of poor diet and medical practices of the 1800's. Yes, it was gross and the kids found it hilarious - but along the way, they learned a lot too! Don't you wish history had been that fun when you grew up?
