The Hawaiian Kingdom
Being Forced to Die
Thesis
PRESIDENT WILLIAM McKINLEY
President McKinley strongly favored the annexation of Hawaii. But before he became the president, many Americans were already on the side of the annexation. He then increased his support during and after the Spanish American War. Many of the battles were fought across the Pacific Ocean. The US navy had a difficult time travelling across the span of the Pacific Ocean. McKinley and several pro-annexation groups stated that Hawai’i would be a good naval installation, and a good place for naval ships to stop and refuel between battles. During McKinley’s time in office, the concept of New Imperialism was becoming popular. As the president, he wanted to take control of other land and nations to increase the power of the United States. McKinley even attempted to pass an annexation treaty, but was denied by congress. Hawai’i was annexed to the United States by creating a joint resolution that was passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This allowed McKinley sign the resolution and make Hawai’i part of the US.
