Director's Message

Dear Families,

As summer comes to an end and fall begins, we look back on what the past 6 months have been in all our lives. For many, this has been a time of change both personally and professionally. Reflecting on the changes students and their families have had to deal with in terms of virtual school and working from home has me in awe of the resiliency of students and the commitment of parents to ensure that education is a priority. The world has been changed forever from the effects of COVID 19. We will always remember the losses and sad stories however, I hope we will remember the gains of more family time and the moments when we were all there for each other. Let's resolve to remain hopeful and flexible.

As a precautionary measure, the phrase 'tentative reopening' is in place as we must stay alert for possible changes in our overall status. As of October 1st, AISM's current status is at a level 3. We are anticipating a November 4th school reopening. Additionally, there is a need to accommodate families that may still be out of the country, in transit to Liberia, or quarantining upon arrival. Therefore, we will have asynchronous and synchronous classes to meet the needs of all AISM families. We will do our level best to make these transitional plans go as smoothly as possible for students and teachers as we navigate uncharted territory.

Learning from the not so distant past, we want to prepare ourselves for any unforeseen changes that may occur. Therefore, we would like to invite parents to participate in a Parent Tech Workshop on October 21st at 4 pm GMT. This workshop will focus on giving parents a tutorial on how to access and use Jupiter, G-Suite, and Zoom which are the major platforms used at AISM. We all need a tech tune-up from time to time. This Parent Tech Workshop will be conducted by our Tech Integrationist Ms. Serdia Holcombe. Please sign up for the virtual Parent Tech Workshop.

Stay safe and healthy,

Dr.Bobbi

UN Day Celebration

Big picture

The purpose of the United Nations is to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity, and the well-being of all people. It affords the opportunity for countries to balance global interdependence and national interests when addressing international problems. It is on this basis we are introducing AISM Model United Nations to our upper school students this year, as it provides them with a dynamic platform to take key academic skills in research, argument forming, and essay writing and applying it to real-life scenarios in model diplomacy.

This year, the United Nations is celebrating its 75th Anniversary at a time when the world is hit by a global pandemic, resulting in an unprecedented economic crisis and social impacts. However, if we all work together, not only will we be helping to shape our future, but undoubtedly we will recover stronger. Here at AISM, we would like to play our part in marking the UN’s 75th anniversary by having our students in Kindergarten-Grade 9 participate in a project that asks the question: “What could be done to make the world a better place?”

Students are invited to submit a 10-15 seconds video by Friday, October 9, 2020, stating one thing that would make the world a better place. The videos will be collated and posted on our school’s website in honor of the 75th UN Anniversary. Therefore, by submitting a video you are granting permission for its use.

Watch this video for ideas about making the world a better place. https://youtu.be/MJ_pp81yiqs

Please submit your video to Mr. Parchment at andraeparchment@aismonrovia.com or to your homeroom teacher by October 9th. Please reach out to your homeroom teachers for details, ideas, and if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Mr. Parchment
