Raider Reporter
April/May 2023
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
We are reaching the homestretch of the 2022-2023 school year with the end of the third marking period. Report cards for the third marking period were mailed on Tuesday, April 11th. There are only eight weeks of learning remaining in this school year. It is imperative that students continue to attend school each and every day and complete all of their assignments. Our students that struggle academically usually have a higher number of absences and subsequently more missing assignments. It is not often when I review a student’s grades and the student is struggling when they have completed all of the assignments for a class.
Our counseling staff has been busy verifying student course requests for the 2023-2024 school year. Parents and students often like to make requests for teachers. It is not possible to honor requests for specific teachers, however, parents can submit a written request if they would like their child NOT to be scheduled with a specific teacher. We will only honor those requests from parents if their student, or a sibling of the student, already had that teacher and had a less-than-positive experience with that teacher. All requests are to be submitted to me in writing or via email at jason.melynchek@flushingschools.org no later than Friday, May 5, 2023. If a request is sent via email, parents will receive email verification that their email has been received.
Our students continue to excel in many aspects, including academic competitions, athletics, music, and other school related events. We do our best to publicize these successes on our school’s Facebook and Twitter pages. Be sure to “Like” Flushing High School on Facebook and follow Flushing High School on Twitter @FlushingMIHS. By being connected on social media, students and parents can be up-to-date on Flushing High School information.
Lastly, I wanted to take this opportunity to notify our Flushing High School families that the 2022-2023 school year will be my last as the principal of Flushing High School. I have accepted the position of Deputy Superintendent for our district. This position will begin on July 1st of this year. It is with a heavy heart that I leave Flushing High School. It has truly been a privilege and honor to be the principal of Flushing High School since 2007. We have such a wonderful group of students, parents, and staff to work with. I have truly enjoyed all of my experiences in this position. The good news is that I still have the opportunity to be around and continue to serve Flushing Community Schools. It is truly a great place to work. The district will be posting the high school principal position in the coming weeks and we will be sure to communicate who will be the next principal of Flushing High School.
Sincerely,
Jason Melynchek
Principal

High School Election
It’s the last play of the year! The Flushing High School Theatre Department proudly presents the comedy, “High School Election” written by Murray Austin
It's election time at Stargell High, and the candidates are ready. Surfer-guy Dag is too irresponsible to feed his pet shark, Amber wants to mandate happiness, Nathan will soon end the reign of evil Big Pizza, Pam is threatening opposition voters, Jane and Joe are crazy in love, and Victor is homesick for Russian politics. In this outrageous parody of school elections, candidates all agree to play fair. "If there's no mud-slinging, we'll all stay clean." Throw in devious campaigns, creative attack ads, singing candidates, a dose of truth serum, and disillusioned voters, and "fair" becomes a relative term.
Come see, “High School Election” at Flushing High School for only $10.00 on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13th at 7:00 pm, and Sunday, May 14th at 2:30 pm at the Auditorium .
Drop-Off/Pick-Up
When dropping your child off in the morning or picking up your child in the afternoon at the main entrance of the high school, please keep the following in mind: Drop-off and pick-up should be done in the left-hand lane of the parking lot. Please keep the right-hand lane clear to accommodate through traffic. This is also a safety concern as we do not want students walking in front of cars that are in the left-hand lane, especially in the morning when it is still dark. Thank you for helping us with this issue and keeping our students safe.
Yearbook
If you haven’t ordered the 2022-23 yearbook yet, you can still do so. Order online at www.jostensyearbooks.com by April 14th to guarantee your yearbook. The books are going fast, so make sure you reserve your copy today. Senior parents, we still have a few spots open for our Proud Parent Ads. If interested, please email yearbook@flushingschools.org
for details. Space is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Test Out
Under the State of Michigan’s Michigan Curriculum Law, testing out is an option available to any student who can demonstrate that he/she meets or exceeds the content expectations associated with a specific course. By earning a qualifying score of 78% or higher on a course’s assessment(s), a student can test out of the course and receive credit for that course. This credit, while counting toward graduation, does not impact a student’s grade point average; the student will receive credit but not a grade for the course.
Parents of students wishing to test out must submit a request in writing or via email to
deborah.goldstein@flushingschools.org by Monday, April 17th. Please be sure to include the student’s name and the name of the course(s) the student wishes to attempt to test out of. In early May, students will receive information regarding what they should know and any work they must complete in advance of the testout process. Testouts will occur in June. Specific dates and times for testouts will be included in the information students receive in May.
