PSAT Testing
On Wednesday, October 13, at 7:55 a.m., all sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT exam. Freshmen and seniors will not be required to report to school until 11:15 a.m. There will be no cost to students for the PSAT/NMSQT exam.
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). This exam is a standardized assessment that will serve as great practice for the SAT Exam which is taken during junior and/or senior year. Students will also have an opportunity, through their participation and performance, to enter scholarship programs and receive access to college and career planning tools.
The PSAT/NMSQT assessment showcases the classroom skills and knowledge that are essential for college and career readiness and success. We encourage your child to take advantage of the many benefits the PSAT test offers:
Connects students to colleges and universities across the country, and to scholarship organizations by opting in to Student Search Service®.
Prepares students for the new SAT®, and college, and it fuels practice recommendations on Khan Academy®.
Matches students with AP® courses that make the most of their academic strengths. AP classes can provide an edge in the admission process and an opportunity to earn college credit.
We are looking forward to providing this opportunity for all sophomores and juniors this year. We are confident this practice will serve as a valuable learning experience and assist in our student’s future preparations.
Updates from the Guidance Office
Guidance counselors visited Grade 9 classrooms during September. Here is the presentation with the information counselors shared with students.
Grade 10 and 11 students should be getting ready for the PSAT test in October. To learn more about how to prepare for the PSAT test, please click here. Here is the presentation we reviewed with Grade 10 students.
Guidance counselors will be working with Grade 11 students on future planning this year - developing their post-high school plan - in classrooms and individual meetings throughout the year. Counselors visited Junior English classes and reviewed graduation requirements, discussed the upcoming PSAT's, National Honor Society, graduation requirements, and materials in their Guidance Google Classroom. We also had students set up a College Board account if they had not already created one. If they already had an account, we had them verify their account information and access. They will access their PSAT scores and register for SAT exams this spring through their College Board Account. Here is the presentation we reviewed with students
Important Dates for the Class of 2023
For Grade 12 students, future planning will be a major focus with students this year, and to help get that process started, we held an assembly with Seniors to talk about future/college planning. Guidance counselors will be scheduling individual meetings with seniors soon.
Here is a copy of the presentation.
Scholarship Information & Resources - this document is in Seniors Guidance Google classrooms. We will update this whenever we receive an outside scholarship (end of the presentation) - we recommend you check it frequently!

NEASC Accreditation Visit
6 educators conducted an on-site Decennial Accreditation visit of Rockland Senior High School on September 27th through September 29th. The Accreditation visit was conducted under the direction of the Commission on Public Schools of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
The purpose of this Accreditation visit was to review and determine from an outside professional viewpoint the extent to which the school is aligned with the Standards for Accreditation. As part of the assessment, the visiting team met with all school constituents, reviewed the school’s Self-Reflection, visited a number of classes, and examined examples of student work submitted by the school. During the comprehensive Self-Reflection, the faculty attempted to identify the school's strengths and determined those areas in which changes would be beneficial.
The purpose of the visit was to assist the faculty in its pursuit of quality education for its students. The goal of an Accreditation visit was to stimulate a continuing drive for improvement in the school.
The New England Association of Schools and Colleges is a voluntary membership organization of more than 2,000 public schools, colleges and universities, independent schools, and vocational, technical, and career institutions. Of these, over 725 schools have been accredited through the Association's Commission on Public Schools. The Commission works with individual public schools to improve the quality of education through a continuous process of Accreditation and evaluation.

Poppin' Popcorn Fundraiser
The seniors and juniors will be selling Poppin' Popcorn as a fundraiser from September 17-October 8 if you wanted to put that information on the website or in a newsletter. All juniors and seniors are welcome to fundraise and the top seller from each grade will win a free prom ticket. Each student that chooses to sell the popcorn will be given an individual link that they can share on their social media or text to family and friends when they sign up, so that we can keep track of who sells the most. Students are able to sign up as sellers for the junior class with this link ( https://poppinpopcornonline.com/participant/register.php?g=VPUWZC) that is available on Google Classroom. However, the general junior class link to buy from the fundraiser is this https://poppinpopcornonline.com/store/store.php?sID=VPUWZC.

Community Service Opportunities
Guidelines for Completing Community Service
Service must be completed while students are in grades 9-12.
Service completed for a family or a for-profit company is not eligible toward community service hours.
In order for community service hours to be recorded, a community service form (found in the guidance office), must be completed and turned into Mrs. Leahy. An email can also be sent to Mrs. Leahy from the site sponsor verifying the student’s service and hours.
If community service is completed in order to earn academic credit, or for adjudication or disciplinary purposes, it can not also be used to meet Rockland High School’s community service requirement.
The community service requirement is prorated by 6 hours per year for students entering RHS after their freshman year:
Students entering as sophomores will need to complete 18 hours of community service
Students entering as juniors will need to complete 12 hours of community
Students entering as seniors will need to complete 6 hours of community service
For more information regarding community service, or if you have an idea or opportunity, please email Mrs. Leahy at: fleahy@rocklandschools.org or call her at (781) 871-8406
