Oakland Bay Jr. High OBJ
Weekly Update - January16, 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
I hope everyone is staying safe and warm in this chilly weather! It is pretty with the blue sky, but so cold at the same time.
One of our School Improvement Goals is to increase our SBA English Language Arts scores. We are doing that by implementing different instructional strategies in the classroom. Please encourage your child to read at home! Students should be bringing home a book from their ELA classroom to read outside of school. Ask your child what they are reading?

SCHOOL DISCIPLINE DATA
- In November 89% of our students did not receive an office discipline referral. In December that number rose to 94% of all students not receiving a referral. Only 6% of our students received a referral in December.
- Major versus minor discipline referrals were down by 15% between November and December. Minor referrals are managed by the teacher, while major referrals are managed by administrators.
- Our 8th graders are currently out performing our 7th graders. 8th graders received 36% of all referrals, while our 7th graders received 64% of all referrals.
- We have had 9 suspensions so far this school year. At this time last year, OBJ had 36 suspensions, and in 2021-22 by the end of December there were 72 suspensions or exclusions from school. Behavior has dramatically improved!
- Staff are teaching students how to recognize what is within our control and what is outside of our control. This helps students regulate their emotions. See the diagram below.
