Helping Your Student Succeed
Staying involved in your student's education when they are in middle school can sometimes be challenging. Your student has reached an age where they may say they do not want or need your help, but parental involvement is vital to your student's success. Try these strategies to help your student succeed:
- Check your student's grades in Powerschool often. Sit down with them weekly to review their successes and failures.
- Communicate with the school! Email your student's teachers about concerns. Check the Dempsey website often. Sign up for the Dempsey email list (via the website) to stay up-to-date with school news. Attend Parent/Teacher conferences at the end of the month.
- Talk to your student daily about what happened at school. Do not take "stuff" or "fine" as an answer! Instead ask "What is the best (or worst) thing that happened at school today?"
- Listen to their worries. Too often parents try to fix things without listening to the whole story. Listening goes a long way to helping your student feel supported. Oftentimes, they will be able to fix their problems on their own.
- Teach your student to be responsible for their actions and their schoolwork.
- Attendance is important! Students can't learn if they are not at school and being on time sets the tone for the day.
- Do not forget the school counselors! We are available to help with any concerns and we provide a variety of services to help students succeed.
Dempsey Helpers Starts Soon!
Dempsey Helpers is a leadership program for middle school students that promotes healthy life choices. Activities include organizing Red Ribbon Week, serving as tour guides for new students, and attending after-school meetings and trainings. It is a great opportunity for students who want to make good decisions and become a positive role model to others! Interested students should fill out an application before our first after-school meeting on Wednesday, September 25. Applications can be found in the office or on the Dempsey Guidance webpage. Please contact Mrs. Nicely or Ms. Ziegler with any questions!
