Texture
Definition:In the visual arts, texture is the perceived surface quality of a work of art. It is an element of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design and is distinguished by its perceived visual and physical properties.
Texture is what may give the artwork an appearance and fools the eye into perceiving a physical characteristic that may not really be there.
Some paintings that include texture
Starry Night Sky
This is a piece done by Van Gogh . The texture present fools the eyes into believing that the city is further back but in reality it is on the same canvas
Prayer Wall
This is a piece by a more recent artist that goes by Von Glitschka. The intricate lines and shading provide surreal look and actually seem that if you were to touch the canvas you would be touching a brick of the wall
The Scream
this is a painting by Edvard Munch. the different stokes and paint provide a swirl like texture that compliments the painting and ,makes the hands more realistic when on his face
How Van Gogh's paintings show texture?
an Gogh started to imitate Gauguin's technique of painting from memory during this time which resulted in his paintings becoming more attractive and less realistic. Van Gogh's emerging style saw him emotionally reacting to subjects through his use of color and brush work. He deliberately used colors to capture mood, rather than using colors realistically. No other artist was doing so at this time. Van Gogh said: Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I see before me, I make more arbitrary use of color to express myself more forcefully.
