The space race was the race between the U.S.A and the Soviet Union. It was part of the cold war and it was the race to be the first to get a man on the moon.
First man in space
On April 12, 1961 the Soviet put the first man in space, it was Yuri Gagarin.
In May 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American in space.
On July 20, 1969, Americans Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first men on the moon. Armstrong made his famous quote "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," as he first touched the lunar surface.
The Apollo program which was responsible for the moon landing and first man in space, went on to land successfully on the moon five more times by 1972. It also was responsible for the disaster that killed three astronauts.
