January events that made our staff proud included the Straight “A” Recognition, A/B Recognition, the Bringing Up Grades acknowledgment (“BUG Roll”), and Student of the Month. These festivities demonstrated our appreciation for the hard work that these students put forth to improve themselves and be positive members of the H.E.D. community. In addition to the academic recognitions, we extended our appreciation with the Student Behavior Incentive and of course our monthly Character Counts recognition. Students amaze us every day with their effort, hard work, dedication, and kindness.
With January here and gone, what do we have to look forward to? February is a short month, but it does start off with a bang! February 1 is our One School, One Book Activity Night from 6-7:30 p.m. We have a lot of fun activities planned for that night! Progress Reports will be going home February 2. The fifth-grade team is taking part in the Talent Show on February 16 (parents are invited). We also have an early release that day at 11:10 a.m. and no school February 19. Finally, parents/guardians are invited to our annual “Dummer Game Night” scheduled for March 2. More information will be coming home soon!
Both grades will soon be taking the PARCC, a series of exams that will take place beginning in March. These tests will analyze mathematics and reading in fourth grade, while the fifth grade will be assessed in mathematics, reading, and science. Please begin to talk to your children about the importance of these exams and to just try their best. These results will stay in your child’s file, and you will be able to use these yearly tests to track your child’s progress as an individual, compared to the state and compared to the nation. If you have any questions about these assessments, you can contact me at 815-786-8498.
Sincerely,
Lynette Ford

NEWS FROM OUR NURSE
Attention Parents of Current 5th Grade Students
6th Grade Health Requirements for 2018-19 School Year
It’s not too early to start planning for next school year. Below is a list of health requirements for entry into 6th grade. The physical exam and immunization record are due by the first day of school.
· Complete physical exam: Please note that a sports physical does not meet the requirement for the 6th grade physical.
· Up - to - date immunizations to include: Tdap, 2- varicella doses, hepatitis B series, and meningococcal vaccine. Please check with your health care provider to be sure these immunizations are included on your child’s 6th grade physical exam.
· Dental exam: due by May 15, 2019
Health packets will be sent home in the near future with your child. Health forms may also be found on the district website or picked up in the main office. If you have questions about any of these requirements you may contact Mrs. Meyer, School Nurse at 815-786-8498.
HEALTH TIPS
- Fever or feeling feverish/chills (not everyone with flu will have a fever)
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue (tiredness)
- Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults
Guidelines to follow when ill with the flu:
- Stay home when sick. Students should be kept home if they have a fever greater than 100 degrees F along with a cough and/or sore throat. Students should stay home for at least 24-hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.
- Follow basic health hygiene practices to limit the spread of illness, like the 3 C's (Clean, Cover and Contain).
- Clean - wash you hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs
- Cover - your cough or sneeze with your elbow or sleeve
- Contain - students should stay home if they're sick.
- We also ask that when you call your student in sick, please indicate if they have a fever greater than 100 degrees F along with a cough and/or sore throat.
We at Sandwich School District #430 are working hard to promote a safe and healthy learning environment. We understand that children can't learn if they are sick.
FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH
- Brush and floss your teeth every day
- Eat nutritious food
- Choose healthy snacks and drinks
- Visit your dentist regularly
- Make mouth guards a part of any sport activity
The State of Illinois requires all children enrolled in Kindergarten, 2nd, and 6th grades to have a dental exam on file with the school by May 15, 2018. Any 2nd or 6th grade student not meeting this requirement will have their final report card held. Any questions, please contact your school nurse.
ONE SCHOOL, ONE BOOK FAMILY NIGHT - FEB. 1ST 6:00-7:30
FANTASTIC 4TH GRADE
Throughout the month of January students were taking their winter benchmark assessments in AIMSweb, MAP, and within our curriculum. We began our One School, One Book with an assembly at the beginning of the month. We also enjoyed a trip to the Opera House to see "Tales of Olympus".
Present...
We look forward to seeing all families at our How to Steal a Dog Family Night on Thursday, February 1st from 6:00-7:30! This will be a great opportunity to have a fun night celebrating the book you've been able to share with your student over the past few weeks.
In Reading, students can look forward to continuing to summarize, finding the main idea, and discovering text structure. In Math, we are working hard on those fractions: comparing, estimating, adding, subtracting! In Social Studies, many classes will be continuing to study the various regions that make up the United States while also looking at Civil Rights events and key figures. In Science, we will be having some fuzzy visitors joining us at the end of the month while continuing to look at a variety of topics: soil, rocks, waves, energy, and STEM activities.
Future...
Fundraising will continue for our St. Baldrick's event on March 15th, if your student has not had a chance to talk to you about this, ask them! It is our 10th annual event and every penny that is donated makes a difference.
FABULOUS 5TH GRADE
In January, fifth graders attended a fun, informative show at the Opera House on Ben Franklin, which reinforced many of the facts they've learned in Social Studies. On February 1, the final activity for our One School, One Book program on How to Steal a Dog will take place. One School, One Book has been a fun addition to normal classroom activities including daily prizes and students sharing favorite parts of the book with each other. Many students completed the book ahead of schedule because they just didn't want to put it down!
Science Fair projects are due on February 26. Students are encouraged to ask questions along the way so they aren't overwhelmed the weekend before it's due! Remember that the packet shows exactly how the teachers grade the project and presentation. Good luck and have fun experimenting!
