Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
Ahoy, Pirates!
As we now turn our attention to the close of the school year, that leads us to begin to think about how we will reopen next school year. I have been participating in weekly calls with superintendents from around the country and one thing is becoming clear - we will need to begin to rethink what school looks like. I have come to learn over the last few weeks that we may not run school exactly as we have in the past. That should not be a frightening thing for us; it should be exciting! We will have a chance and possibly the flexibility to think differently about school. Early reports that COVID-19 may return in the fall have sparked conversations about having hybrid school years until a vaccination has been developed. For example, Mr. Shaun Cooper (former PCMS science teacher who is in China) recently returned to school with students being both at the building and online. In Booneville, MS, teachers teach students from other districts to support districts who are having problems finding teachers. While others are returning to school with a focus on hygiene and social distancing rules being taught. I am sure we will land somewhere between these examples. Over the coming weeks, we will begin to devise multiple re-entry plans for our consideration. Regardless of our approach, we will be ready to serve our students thanks to our efforts over the last few years to strengthen our technological infrastructure and the seamless inclusion of technology into our daily instruction. You have done the work; now our children will reap the benefits. We indeed may have a new normal, and you - my friends - will be history makers! So, how will they remember us 100 years from now? I declare we will be remembered as trailblazers and innovators!
With that, I submit the Captain's Log. #nosurrender #2020vision #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot cje

REMINDER REGARDING OUR EXPECTATIONS
Senior Celebration Reimagined
Last week's Log laid out our plans for our senior celebrations. This week, let's light up our neighborhoods with blue and red lights in support of our seniors and those at transition points. We will begin our official end-of-year celebrations with our senior spotlight at 8:20 pm each night until all seniors have been recognized. Individual senior portraits will be shared, and you will have an opportunity to comment to each senior. I am sure parents will be excited to see well wishes from their current and former teachers and administrators. Additionally, we will spotlight the seniors at our high school in a unique way as well as have a senior display on the south side of city hall.
Mrs. Mannion provided parents and students with a battery of events as well. The high school activities will serve as our cornerstone events. Stay tuned for photos and postings regarding each event. This will be an exciting time for our children. Keep those lights burning bright!

Accountability Task Force Meets: The Accountability Task Force met via teleconference this past Wednesday. Discussions included the following:
- Reporting for 2020: It was the consensus of task force members that any metrics for the 2019-2020 school year should only be distributed to districts for internal use only. Metrics should not be disseminated publicly due to COVID-19 and the suspension of assessments and accountability ratings.
- Preparing for 2021: While the USDE has not provided any guidance as to additional waivers in future years, it was the consensus of task force members to pursue policy relief for the 2020-2021 school year. The task force acknowledged the growing sentiment among Mississippi educators that the current situation provides a prime opportunity to change the accountability model or “to blow it up and start over.” Several task force members expressed support for testing next year, but only if districts/schools are held harmless and results are used as a new baseline.
- Changes to College and Career Readiness: The task force considered two options for more fully representing career readiness in the accountability model. Option 1 includes WorkKeys performance as a new component of college and career readiness by reducing points to 25 for ACT and awarding 25 points for WorkKeys. Several task force members noted that students should not have to take both tests. Option 2 includes diploma endorsements as a new component of college and career readiness. While external facilitators and MDE staff voiced support for Option 2, multiple task force members voiced support for Option 2 citing Lt. Governor Hosemann’s support for and industry’s utilization of WorkKeys.
