Volleyball
7. one who is courageous, caring and cooperative.
This past week, our volleyball girls showed us all an important part about being a BRICKIE.
Along with celebrating our seniors and their parents on Monday in a DOMINATING win over Hammond Gavit, the Lady Brickies hosted a DIG PINK night on Thursday in their regular season home finale to honor those who have battled and are currently battling cancer and raise money for the American Cancer Society. Prior to the varsity warm-ups, each Lady Brickie showed great CARE in presenting a flower to a loved one to honor either their COURAGEOUS battle or to commemorate the battle of someone who is no longer with us. It was emotional ... it was beautiful. On a night when the scoreboard result was a tough loss to Andrean, the Hobart volleyball team WON in all the ways that really count.
THANK YOU to Coach Yanez for bringing this volleyball event back to H-town and to all of the parents, sponsors and supporters who helped make this such a GREAT night to be a BRICKIE!
Hobart closed out the regular season with Monday night WIN over Hammond Gavit on SENIOR NIGHT and two hard fought NCC losses against Munster and Andrean to end the week. Our girls are 13-17 on the season with the IHSAA SECTIONAL about to begin. The Lady Brickies play Valparaiso @ 7 PM on Thursday, October 17th at Crown Point HS.
"Some Wish For It ... We Work For It" has been Hobart's focus this fall and it has been a fun ride so far. GOOD LUCK LADIES! WE BELIEVE IN YOU!!

Soccer
5. a person who exhibits integrity, initiative, perseverance and has pride in one's school, community and self.
Girls
The Lady Brickies hosted the IHSAA Sectional this past week and competed Tuesday in the 1st round against Portage - ranked #8 in NWI. Hobart fell behind early and ultimately lost the contest 5-2 ... drawing an end to their season. The result was not what Coach Provins and the girls hoped for, but the way our girls BATTLED until the final whistle ... and ALL SEASON LONG no matter what the circumstances ... was OUTSTANDING! Our girls played with so much PRIDE - always playing the game and never the scoreboard. Their EFFORT and DETERMINATION to never give up were inspiring. Seniors Grace Nestich and Lauren Romeo scored the final goals of their decorated careers on Tuesday night and walked off the field with their teammates and coaches for the final time with their heads held high. In a season filled with unexpected twists and turns, these young ladies reminded us all once again that it really isn't about the winning & losing .... rather it's about the journey and how you play the game.
CONGRATULATIONS to the coaching staff and our girls for allowing us to share the journey this fall and cheer you on with loud voices and PRIDE in our hearts. THANK YOU for representing H-town so well!
Boys
Hobart played on Tuesday night over at Valparaiso High School in the IHSAA Sectional against Chesterton - ranked #1 in the state of Indiana. It was as tough a draw as our boys could get and though the competition was fierce throughout the contest, the result was a 5-0 loss which closed the book on the 2019 season. Obviously the sting of the sectional loss hurts, but what our boys have shown us this year ... and over the past 3 years ... is something to be VERY PROUD OF! In 2017, starting a lot of sophomores, the boys soccer team finished with 1 win on the year. Two years later, with a lot of those sophomores now seniors, our boys soccer team appears to have turned the corner on a complete rebuild. This group has showed INITIATIVE, put in lots of WORK WORK WORK, and PERSEVERED the tough times to arrive at where they are today. Hobart finished with a 7-5-3 record in 2019 and even though the work isn't done, WHAT A TURNAROUND!!
CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Weinman and Coach Harris and all of our boys on a GREAT year! THANK YOU for how you've represented what a BRICKIE is all about!

Football
2. a person whose job it is to build
After starting the season with back-to-back tough losses (#5-ranked Chesterton & #2-ranked Merrillville), the Brickies have been BUILDing momentum with 5 straight victories heading into Friday night's HOMECOMING clash with NCC foe Munster. Hobart went to WORK WORK WORK early and often ... getting the JOB done on both sides of the ball in one of the most DOMINANT performances these eyes have seen in high school football.
Ok ... brace yourselves for the onslaught ...
8:32 left in the 1st Quarter - Hobart scores on a 1-yard run by senior DJ Lipke to make it 7-0.
7:28 left in the 1st Quarter - Hobart scores after an interception by senior Hayden Homoky gave the Brickies the ball deep in Mustang territory. Senior Tyler Schultz takes it in from 1-yard out. 14-0.
6:56 left in the 1st Quarter - Hobart scores quickly on a 10-yard scamper by junior QB Riley Johnston. 21-0
6:17 left in the 1st Quarter - Hobart scores after an interception by senior Matthew Benton once again gave the Brickies the ball near the goal line. Johnston ran it in from 9 yards out. 28-0
2:52 left in the 1st Quarter - Hobart scores after yet another Mustang turnover ... I don't even remember if this one was a fumble or interception ... they both happened near the end of the 1st Quarter and it's all a bit of a blur. This time it was Lipke again. 35-0
7.9 seconds left in the 1st Quarter - Hobart scores AGAIN on a 45-yard pass & catch from Johnston to Benton ... nuff said. 42-0.
By halftime, the Brickies had BUILT a ridiculous 65-0 lead that would also become the final score as Hobart simply played out the running clock in the 2nd half. Don't let the gaudy score fool you into thinking Hobart did anything unsportsmanlike ... on the contrary, it was really just a case of EVERYTHING going right for the "good guys" and everything going wrong for a team that was clearly outmatched at every position. Lipke finished with 159 yards on 15 carries and 4 TDs. Schultz and Johnston each scored 2 TDs as Hobart POUNDED the ball on the ground for a total of 326 yards!
It was an IMPRESSIVE performance to say the least. These guys appear to be getting pretty good at doing their JOB and are BUILDING quite the resume of awesomeness ... winning their 6th STRAIGHT and staying UNDEFEATED in NCC play! Hobart has outscored it's opponents 254-47 during the current winning streak. Wow ... let's hope this ride lasts about 7 more games :).
Hobart will host arch nemesis Lowell next Friday night @ The Brickyard as we celebrate SENIOR NIGHT! GOOD LUCK GUYS!!

Boys Tennis
3. a helpful and reliable person
After losing to Merrillville in the sectional finals a week ago, the "team" season ended for our Boys tennis players. However, another "team" is still competing ... the #1 doubles team of juniors Chad Tomaga and Nick Kolopanis went undefeated at the "team" sectional, which earned them a chance to compete in the "individual" sectional hosted by Munster High School last week. On Tuesday, Chad and Nick defeated the duo from East Chicago in convincing fashion 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the finals!! On Wednesday, the team from Bishop Noll was unable to compete, which meant that Chad and Nick were named SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS! They will play next Saturday, October 19th, at Portage High School REGIONAL against the team from NorthWood.
This is the FIRST year that these two have competed as doubles partners. It's been exciting to watch them grow to TRUST and RELY on each other. They COMMUNICATE on the court and HELP cover for each other ... which is exactly what great TEAMMATES do! They seem to be clicking on all cylinders right now - next Saturday should be fun!!
THANK YOU guys for representing another key aspect of what it means to be a BRICKIE!
CONGRATULATIONS and GOOD LUCK at the REGIONAL competition! YOU CAN DO IT!!

Cross Country
4. a person who strives for the best
Yesterday, both the girls & boys harriers traveled to Hebron High School in Porter County to compete in the IHSAA SECTIONAL. In order to advance to next week's REGIONAL, Hobart needed to be one of the top 5 placing teams or our runners had to be in the top 10 among competitors from non-advancing teams.
Girls
Through the cold and relentless wind yesterday morning, the Lady Brickies were STRIVING to put everything they've trained for on the line to advance and gain another week of racing in the IHSAA post-season. This group has been a work-in-progress throughout the season ... improving each week and looking to peak when the time is right. With everything at stake, our girls were at their BEST!! Sophomore Sydney Belk (18th) and senior Hailey Kerlin (20th) both placed in the top 20 to lead Hobart to a 3rd place overall team finish and solidify a birth in next week's IHSAA REGIONAL!! Senior Lauren Romeo (23rd), junior Lily Butler (28th) and sophomore Mikayla Fuentes (29th) rounded out the varsity line-up for Hobart.
This is the 9th CONSECUTIVE REGIONAL QUALIFYING group for the Lady Brickies!! That's one heckuva run :)
Boys
The boys actually ran first at Hebron on Saturday morning ... which means they had the first chance of the day to punch their ticket to the next round. This group has battled injuries and had to overcome a lot of adversity to get where they are now. As much as cross country is considered an "individual sport" in the eyes of the IHSAA, this TEAM ... under the leadership of Coach A and Coach Curatolo ... is filled with individuals who collectively STRIVE to be their BEST when their BEST is needed. On Saturday, they delivered!! Junior Bruce Leipart finished 5th place overall and was joined in the top 20 boys by senior Bryan Cherry (14th) and sophomore Joe Meagher (20th) to lead the Brickies to a 5th place team finish and earned a trip to the REGIONAL!! Junior Mark Perez (34th) and freshman Ryan Wein (47th) also contributed to the varsity scoring for the Brickies. Sophomores Kaiden Click (48th) and Donovan Ruiz (49th) rounded out the Hobart line-up.
This is Hobart's 12 CONSECUTIVE year qualifying for the IHSAA REGIONAL! GREAT WORK WORK WORK GUYS!!
The IHSAA REGIONAL will take place NEXT SATURDAY MORNING at Lemon Lake County Park in Crown Point. Race time is 10:30 AM. GOOD LUCK!!

The FANTASTIC FIVE
The MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Homecoming 2019
The SENIORS claimed the coveted SPIRIT BRICK in one of the closest races in recent memory as the Freshman class gave them all they could handle! Special thanks to Mr. Cook and Mr. Schultz for running such a raucous pep rally! If that's what helped our football team build a 65-0 lead at the half, maybe we should do it every week?
It was exhausting ... it was a lot of fun. Let's try to keep those good good good vibrations going now that we know what it looks like.
