Tips for Effective Praise

Positive - encouraging and appreciative

Reinforces High Expectations - if we praise something that is too easy, we may undermine their confidence

Appropriate - written praise is particularly effective

Independence Is Promoted - as part of our praise, ask questions that encourage self-reflection and focus on the student’s feelings

Sincere - it comes from the heart, your mean it, it’s authentic

Effort and Progress Are Noted - effective praise focuses on effort and progress rather than ability
