Celebrating 20 Years of Eagle Ridge Academy - Executive Director Jason Ulbrich
Dear Eagle Ridge Academy Families,
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year which marks Eagle Ridge Academy’s 20th anniversary! The Academy opened in 2004 with just 100 students in grades 6, 7, and 9. The school’s original location was in Best Buy’s former headquarters on Flying Cloud Road in Eden Prairie. And, yes, the yellow tag carpet was still in the building.
From the start, the pursuit of academic excellence has been one of Eagle Ridge Academy’s primary goals. Our mission states that “…we will demand their best in academic achievement and honorable character.” Academic excellence is measured by the MN Department of Education by using the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments in math, reading, and science. While ERA measures academic excellence beyond the MCAs, we are held accountable for our performance on these state assessments which are given in the spring of each year.
Over the past two weeks, numerous rankings and reports regarding schools have been published. These include MN state assessment scores from 2023 and US News & World Report and Niche rankings. Our students did amazing! This is especially notable because, of the top 20 schools ranked, the average free and reduced percent is 12% as compared to ERA’s 29%! This means that our staff and students are making a difference. I think what excites me the most is that our College Readiness Index Ranking is 4th in the state of MN, and our College Curriculum Breadth Rank is 5th in the state of MN.
Sincerely,
Jason Ulbrich, Executive Director
U.S. News & World Report Names Eagle Ridge Academy a Top 3 Minnesota High School
Eagle Ridge Academy has again been named one of the best high schools in the state and the country by earning the 2023 U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools Medal and Charter Medal.
The 2023 report ranked Eagle Ridge Academy as the third best high school in the state out of 400 schools recognized and 186th in the country out of 17,680 schools recognized. This year marks the ninth year in a row U.S. News & World Report has honored Eagle Ridge Academy and the third year as one of Minnesota’s top five schools.
U.S. News & World Report determines their school rankings this year by looking at six indicators of school success—college readiness, college curriculum breadth, math and reading proficiency and performance, underserved student performance, and graduation rates. The 2023 awards were derived from both 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 school year data to account for the cancellation of state testing in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hello from Long Term Substitute Nurse Que Rivera
Hello Eagle Ridge Academy Families,
My name is Mrs. Rivera and I would like to take this time to introduce myself as the long-term substitute nurse for Mrs. Celia Bussler while she is out on maternity leave. I will be working as the nurse in the health office through the end of December 2023, and then Mrs. Bussler will transition back into her role after winter break.
I am in the process of reviewing student immunization records. If your child is missing one or more of the required immunizations and does not have an exemption on file, you will be receiving an email from my office. If you would like to see which immunizations are required or file an exemption, you can find these documents at www.eagleridgeacademy.org/health/.
If your child has medications at school, we will need a new authorization of medication administration form completed, which can be found here or in the school nurse's office, and a current order from the prescribing doctor. The authorization of administration document needs to be completed for any medication (prescription and non-prescription) that will need to be given at school over any given period. Medications, doctor orders, and administration authorization forms can be brought to school during the next few weeks of school.
If your child has a chronic medical condition or health concern and we have not spoken yet, please email me so we can set up a time to discuss your child's specific needs. My goal as the school nurse is to partner with you to ensure your child's health and safety while they are at school. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance. Here's to a great school year!
Regards,
Que Rivera

Classical Corner: What is Our Story?
We are off to a great start this school year! The smiles in the halls are contagious and the energy is palpable. The overall feelings of being back together seem to be excitement, and gratitude. Indeed, it is our hope that each child coming in with a filled backpack is leaving with a filled heart, and it certainly seems as though we are on the right track to meeting that goal. What a wonderful way to begin a new school year!
As I have walked the halls these first weeks, I have heard students introducing themselves to their new teachers and classmates, sharing a bit about themselves. I’ve seen students shaping detailed narratives that focus on special moments in their lives, letting the reader learn more about them as a scholar, as a learner, as a person. I’ve witnessed turn and talks in multiple languages, building connection and driving learning. In essence, I have heard our classrooms building community. Stories are being shared, class cultures are being built, and scholars are finding their footing in a new year.
With each new bit shared, each new story told, it made me think of the culture of our overall academy. Now stepping into our 20th year, we have a storied past. As a staff, we have been able to hear the perspectives of several founders of the school as they reflect on the different stages the Academy has been through over the years. Their stories are endless–sometimes comical, always inspiring. But we know what really makes a school is the people–the students, the staff, the parents. And so in this 20th year, while we reflect on our story as an academy, I look to focus in on the story of our people.
What is your story as a parent seeking the best education for your child?
What is your child’s story as a scholar of Eagle Ridge?
Primarily, what is our story together?
For it is these stories that form the heart of an institution. I look forward to hearing yours, to building on the strength of our community, and to stepping into our next stage together.
Sincerely,
Suzannah Toso

Please ensure that your student wears a belt with the approved uniform pants and shorts.

If you have the following items to donate or are still holding onto a uniform bank piece from last year, please email Mrs. Missy Madigan to coordinate drop-off.

Developing Connections
Ways to Get Involved and Give Back - Kelly Schiffman, Director of Development
Dear Eagle Ridge Academy Families,
Welcome to our 2023-24 school year at ERA! We are excited to engage our families in meaningful and fun activities this year. At Eagle Ridge Academy, we encourage and celebrate involvement from our students, families, and staff/faculty in a variety of ways. Be involved by attending or helping plan an event, volunteering for a project or for a teacher, talking to your employer about sponsorships or partnerships with ERA, or donating a gift to support the important work we do here at Eagle Ridge Academy.
As a tuition-free, public charter school and a school of choice, Eagle Ridge Academy receives state funding on a per pupil funding structure – determined by MN State legislature. Per pupil funding follows every Minnesota student to the public school the student attends. Both traditional public school districts and public charter schools receive the same per pupil funding rate. But unlike traditional public schools, charter schools do not receive any funds from local voter-approved levies, which, for Eagle Ridge Academy, equates to nearly 30% less funding per year than our neighboring school districts. Therefore, in order to sustain the Academy into future generations, enhance programming, make facility improvements and additions, and offer a competitive compensation plan to our teachers, we must raise funds to close the funding gap.
We are excited to announce that this fall’s fundraising revenue will support a new outdoor digital monument sign for Eagle Ridge Academy! More information and renderings coming in September.
Funds are raised at Eagle Ridge Academy through several areas of outreach:
· Events
· Corporate Partnerships
· Matching Gift Programs
· Individual Giving
· Employee Giving
· Give to the Max
· Major Gifts
· Capital Campaigns and Year End Appeal
· Grants
· Sponsorships
· Volunteer Match Programs
· Miscellaneous programs such as Raise Right, Microsoft Rewards, etc.
Eagle Ridge Academy is fortunate to have its own foundation, Friends of Eagle Ridge Academy (FERA), a certified 501(c)(3), whose sole purpose is to support and sustain Eagle Ridge Academy for future generations of scholars, and through which donated funds to the Academy are made.
There are several ways to participate in giving at Eagle Ridge Academy. Creating additional revenue sources and building community is important as we strive to create the best possible educational experience for our students while staying true to our mission. Enjoy giving from the heart for a good cause with the benefit of receiving a tax deduction.
For more information on how you may participate in developing Eagle Ridge Academy, please contact Kelly Schiffman at 952-746-7760, ext. 1107 or by email at kschiffman@eagleridgeacademy.org. Visit our website for online giving and other important information at https://eagleridgeacademy.org/giving/ways-to-support-era/.

Corporate Match Programs
Do you work for an employer who has a Matching Gift Program or supports community events as recommended by the employee?
Consider reaching out to your Community Relations or HR departments to ask about their community support and employee giving opportunities. Many organizations match employee gifts up to 100% (essentially doubling the impact of your gift to the Academy), donate to charities of choice based on volunteer hours, and sponsor events financially or with in-kind donations. Search this website to see if your workplace matches.
