Counselor's Corner- Appreciating the People in Our Lives
As we enter the month of November, we often think of gratitude, of giving thanks, of counting our blessings. The season of fall has traditionally been a season of harvest. During Thanksgiving we usually feel grateful for the things in our lives—enough food to eat, clothes to wear, and a warm place to stay for the winter.
But what about the people in our lives? There may be people in our lives that we haven’t actually focused on appreciating. Perhaps there are friends that we are upset with at the moment, or stresses within a family, worries about jobs, or money. Perhaps parents are at odds with the adolescents in their households. How are we to appreciate the people in our lives when and if we don’t always agree, or even communicate with them very well?
William James, the noted psychologist, said, “The deepest principle of human nature is a craving to be appreciated.” We all want the recognition, to hear that “thank you”, to feel that our actions are noticed and to make a difference. How we receive appreciation is connected to how we give appreciation. Showing appreciation is a conscious decision to extend ourselves first, not waiting for the other person to make the first move.
So how do we show appreciation to others? Each person is unique and responds in his or her own way, but here are some general ideas:
1. Make eye contact to show that you are really present in the moment.
2. Spend time with others without distractions.
3. Be gracious when challenged, not taking things personally.
4. Be patient with the loved ones in your life.
5. Let someone know exactly why you are grateful by giving an example of how their actions have touched your life.
As we consider gratitude this season, perhaps we can also count relationships among our blessings.

School Attendance is Critical to success
The research is clear that absences in excess of 18 per year have a serious adverse effect a on student's academic success.
We are using the following district protocol at Summit to help support student attendance rates:
3-7 absences- calls from counselor
10 absences- letter from principal
15 absences- family will be required to meet with the principal
19 or more absences- truancy ticket through the OKC Police Department School Truancy Division
*Absences that are accompanied by a doctor's note, evidence of a death in the family, or religious documentation do not count against the 18 days threshold.

We are collecting Box Tops
Summit Middle School is proud to announce the 2019-2020 Box Tops for Education campaign! Our school goal is to raise enough funds through Box Tops collections for STEM lab equipment. To help us meet this goal, each homeroom teacher has a Box Tops for Education bag for convenient donation of clipped Box Tops located in their classroom. Students - start bringing in your clipped Box Tops now!
Hurry, there is an ooey, gooey pizza party at stake for the homeroom that turns in the most Box Tops! A pizza party will be awarded to the winning homeroom, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. Not only this, but if the school goal for this 2019-2020 campaign is reached, Principal Adams, Mrs. Cochrane, and Mr. Self have agreed to be pied in the face. This will be quite an event- let's reach this goal!
Students have two ways to turn in Box Tops (EVEN IF YOU'RE CLIPPING, SCAN RECEIPTS TOO - DOUBLE THE $$):
1) Clippable Box Tops should be cut out and placed in the collection bags in the students' homeroom.
2) Download the Box Tops For Education app - it's FREE! Scan every grocery receipt using the app when you buy eligible Box Tops Products https://www.boxtops4education.com/en/Participating-Products-Page
NEXT and IMPORTANT: there's a "Credit" button in the app that's available AFTER you scan your receipt. Insert your student's homeroom teacher's name to ensure they get credit for Box Tops for the pizza contest!
Finally, another collection site for clipped Box Tops is located on the front office counter. The teacher or the office staff has the ability to win a $25.00 gift certificate for their collection efforts, too! Remember, ANYONE can name Summit Middle School as the school that gets credit for their scanned Box Tops...aunts, uncles, grandmas, cousins, neighbors....ANYONE can collect Box Tops for us. So, encourage everyone you know not to throw money away with items they buy everyday! Let's get collecting - the race is on to meet our goal!
