A Message From The Principal

Dear Henry Families,

It is wonderful to see more students in our classrooms this past week. We also were able to see many of our 8th graders who came to the school for their graduation pictures.

Thank you to all of the parents who attended the virtual parent teacher conferences this past Wednesday. Summer is right around the corner with 9 more weeks to go. We hope that you take the time to enjoy the sun as the days get longer and the weather gets warmer. We also want to remind everyone to please stay safe and be sure to stay focused on achieving your best.

Spring testing will begin this week with ACCESS. Students who are remote will be coming into the building during their designated times. When coming to Henry please be sure to complete the health screener. Here is the link for the health screener:

We have also been recognized by School Sparrow (https://schoolsparrow.com)

Below is the email we received regarding the recognition. You can find the blog post here:

The Best Elementary Schools in Chicago – SchoolSparrow’s Top 10 Out-Performers

Principal Gutierrez,

Your school has been discovered as an outperformer by our more equitable school rating algorithm. We account for parent income, and make adjustments for LEP/CWD students, which illuminates urban schools like yours that are currently obscured by biased school ratings.

Your school’s recognition can be found on these Facebook and Twitter posts.

We hope that you can help bring anti-racist definitions of school quality to the forefront. You can do this by sharing and retweeting our recent twitter and facebook social media posts (links below), urging all the real estate search portals to display fair school ratings.

Congratulations to you and your staff on this recognition, and thank you for your strong leadership and dedication to Chicago kids.

We are proud of our Henry community for this great recognition.

Have a great week!

Juan Gutierrez, Principal

Mary Ann Reynolds, Assistant Principal

Lora Abraham, Assistant Principal

Mindfulness For Parents

These are stressful times we are living in now, which only makes parenting harder. This article talks about how parents can use mindfulness to help make parenting easier:

This week was Career Day! Hopefully your students enjoyed their speakers and learned about some new careers. Some questions to help them reflect on career day:

1. What challenges did this person have to overcome to achieve their goals?
2. How did they overcome these challenges?
3. What is something new you learned about each career?
4. What support did the person have to achieve their goals? What support do you have to achieve your goals?
5. What next steps can you take to help pursue the career you're interested in?

There are many ways your student can take steps now to learn more about different careers and to pursue the careers they are interested in:

-Talk to someone in the field they're interested in
-Read books about topics they're interested in or about people in the career field
-Find after school and summer opportunities to help them increase their knowledge and build skills to help pursue the career they're interested in
-Watch videos about the career or people in the field they're interested in. A good website to explore is www.roadtripnation.com

Here are some good videos if you need help getting started:

  • Tracy Parrish (former teacher and senior marketing manager for the AT&T Foundry
  • Gerard Baker, first Native American Superintendents of Mount Rushmore National Memorial
  • Ira Glass, host of This American Life
  • Betty Cortina-Weiss, editorial director of Latina magazine
  • Raul Ruiz, physician, congressman, and first Latino to earn three graduate degrees from Harvard University
  • Paul Dateh, hip-hop violinist
  • Chris Wink, cofounder of Blue Man Group

As a reminder, I want to make sure this information is meeting your needs, so please complete this survey as soon as you can:
