- Your child brought home an important information sheet regarding Math homework. I have included a copy of it below.

- We began studying insects last week. We are observing Painted Lady larvae in our classroom! The annual 2nd grade Insect Expo will take place on May 25th. Parents and families are invited to attend. More details will come home soon.
- Poetry continues to be our focus in writing. We have learned and practiced writing alliteration and acrostic poems.
Math Information Letter
In math this year the children have had the opportunity to use many different methods for solving addition and subtraction equations. Some of these methods include base ten blocks, money, tallies, partial sums, using number grids, drawing pictures (typcially for smaller numbers), creating open number lines and using the pull down method. Please see the reverse side of this paper for examples of these methods. I would suggest saving this paper for future reference.
For the remainder of the year, we are sending home addition and/or subtraction problems for your child’s homework. Please make sure your child records their thinking on the homework page. If you have shown your child the traditional method (or algorithm) of adding that you learned as a child, that is fine. HOWEVER......the children need to be able to explain and show the concept behind why and how they solve problems and be able to solve the problems in multiple ways. The goal is for the children to understand the concept and not just follow a procedure.
One more important piece of information….We have worked quite a bit on understanding the place value of digits in a number. For example, when looking at the number 235, students need to refer to the 2 as 200, the 3 is 30, etc. They are NOT a 2 and a 3. Please be aware of this as they are doing their math homework this week and in the future.
