From Kristen Hahn:
The NWEA Continuum provides a lot of skills for each RIT band, however we need to pay attention to which skills are grade level appropriate for those students in that specific RIT. Begin with the skills that are most closely aligned to the grade level of the student. If those are mastered, then consider introducing other skills above the grade level. For example, In RIT Band 161-171 it states that students should begin learning multiplication facts. However, if the student is in the 2nd grade, in this RIT they are most likely still struggling with addition and subtraction facts through 20. Therefore, address the addition and subtraction skills first, then if they master that, they'll be ready to be introduced to modeling multiplication.
Another example on the high end would be students who score in the RIT 211-220 in the 4th grade. These students should first work on skills such as creating or extending a number pattern with a given rule, and solving real world problems involving the least common multiple before exploring rates, ratios, proportions or linear functions since those are 6th and 7th grade standards.
If you have any questions or need resources for working with your RIT Band group, please don't hesitate to contact your math coaches, Kristen Hahn or Stephanie Koontz. We are here to support you!
