Intermediate School Weekly Update
Update for Intermediate School families for June 1 - June 5
Weekly Update for Intermediate Families for the week of June 1 - June 5
Good Evening:
This is Gene Hoskins, Sodus Intermediate School Principal. The purpose of this communication is to give Intermediate students and parents updated information weekly throughout the COVID-19 school closure. We have two and half weeks left of school for the 2019-2020 school year - a school year like no other. It is my hope that all students are able to "finish strong" during these final weeks. While the closure has made some of our annual traditions impossible this year, we have tried to modify many of these events so that we can still honor these traditions while in our building remains closed. There are many updates in this week's newsletter that you will want to take note of:
Drop Box For Student Work:
There is a new Intermediate School Drop Box in front of the main entrance of the Intermediate School. Students who have completed the paper packets that were initially sent with students when school closed on March 17 may turn them in by leaving them in this drop box. Students who do not turn the paper packets will not have their grade penalized in any way. However, as was explained in an earlier newsletter to parents, students who turn in completed packets will have their names put into a raffle for prize drawings during the Intermediate School Virtual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, June 17. All students who have completed the packs will also receive bonus credit factored into their 4th quarter rubric grade. You can use the following link to see a picture and location of the drop box: Intermediate School Drop Box
Virtual Olympic Day June 16:
Although we cannot be together for Olympic Day as we traditionally are, we have planned a fun “Virtual Olympic Day” for Tuesday, June 16. We will have grade levels rotate through three activities (Minute To Win It Contests, A Home Scavenger Hunt, and A Breakout Edu Activity) using the schedule below. Each activity will have a Google Meet nickname that you will use to access the virtual activities. There will be staff members available to help explain and monitor the activities. WE will not be awarding willing homerooms as we typically do during Olympic Day - that would be way too difficult to fairly judge this year. However, we do hope you bring a great attitude and competitive spirit, because doing well in these contests will be great bragging rights! It is not necessary to participate in all, or any, of the activities. You can join what you want to do, or just watch and enjoy the fun - there is no pressure. The list of things for the Scavenger Hunt will not be shared until if is time for the contest, but you can use the link for the “Minute To Win It” to see the activities and look from supplies around your house so that you are ready to go on June 16. Again, it is not necessary to join ALL of the Minute To Win It activities - plan on joining in on the activities that you want to participate in. More Information is available with using the following link: Intermediate School “Virtual Olympic Day” 2020
The Awards Ceremony will be Wednesday, June 17 at 1:00 PM. Our plan is to “Live Stream” these awards from Board Room at 1:00 PM on June 17. Parents will be notified if their child is going to be recognized with an award. Later in the day on June 17 we will post the slideshow on our website for anyone who was not able to watch the awards live. I will send the link to the live stream to parents, students, and staff members when we get closer to the awards show.
June 15 - June 17 Pick-up of Student Belongings and Collecting District Materials (borrowed library books, textbooks, etc.):
We plan to distribute student belongings and collect any texts, etc. that are being returned to the school in a manner similar to the way we distributed chrome books. We are going to ask that parents drive around to the back of the school and pull up to the door by the Intermediate cafeteria. You will not have to enter the building. Instead, a staff member will walk out the bags of student belongings to the car and accept any texts, etc. that students are returning. Students will not return their chrome books- we are allowing students to keep their chrome books for the summer. Student belongings (including anything left in the classroom, PE locker, or hall locker) will be returned to you in clear garbage bags. they are handing-in. We will use the following times to return 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM each of the three days listed below. In order to keep the numbers manageable and to prevent long lines for cars, we are gong to divide student body into thirds based on family the students last name. We will be doing this alphabetically using the following break-down:
Monday, June 15 - Last names that begin with letters A-H
Tuesday, June 16 - Last names that begin with letters I - Q
Wednesday, June 17 - Last names that begin with letters R - Z
We want to make the pick-up of belongings and return of text book materials as easy for parents as possible while also keeping the process safe for families and staff members. We do not want parents to have to come to school more than once, so for families with children who have different last names, we leave it to select one of the days listed for your children and we will take care of all children in the family at once. The JSHS will be using the same pick-up schedule as the Intermediate, so this schedule will work for all 4-12 students. We will have reminders of this pick-up schedule with more details as we get closer to the last week.
Daily Count-Down Posted In Forum:
We know that some students are experiencing “computer screen fatigue” and, at the same time, we know that the loss of instructional time students have experienced due the COVID closure in significant. Teachers have a sense of real urgency with the end of school in two weeks and we want to see all students finish the school year strong. We are posting a “Count Down” slide for students in our Intermediate School Forum to remind students that we really do not have that many days of instruction left this year- we hope that this will help motivate them for the remaining days.
Sodus PTO “Book Bus”:
Do you want a FREE BOOK??? This coming Saturday, June 6, we will be traveling to different neighborhoods in the District with a mobile “Book Bus” sponsored by the PTO. Students will have the opportunity to get free books for the summer! Here is what each student has to do from June 1 - June 12 (just 10 days!!):
Good behavior online - no placement in the GoGuardian “Penalty Box”
Complete all assigned work
Attend AT LEAST 80% of classroom meets
Music Choice for 7th Grade (Important Message for Current 6th Grade Students):
Earlier in the week I emailed all 6th grade students and shared information regarding music choice for 7th & 8th grade. Due to the COVID-19 closure we have not had the opportunity to survey students in school as we normally do, and as of last week only 35% of students had completed the google form/survey. You you or your 6th grade child has not already completed this brief google form/survey, PLEASE make sure you complete this short it ASAP. You can access the google form/survey by clicking HERE for more information. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Shim (pshim@soduscsd.org), Mrs. Miller (lmiller@soduscsd.org), or Mrs. Young (jyoung@soduscsd.org).Spanish Translation of New Information
Buena noches:
