Canaan Middle School Update
November 4, 2022
Principal Corner
Canaan Families,
We are off to a fast start to the second quarter and November is a busy month at Canaan Middle School. We have parent-teacher conferences on November 7th for all grade levels and on November 17th for 6th grade only. If you have not had a chance to sign up for a conference, please reach out to your student's classroom teacher.
As we move into the colder months of the year, students will need to bring warmer clothing for recess. A couple of times this year, when the weather is on the cold side, we have given students the option to stay in the gym for recess or go outside. We will try to continue to give students that option until the frigid weather sets in, but students should always dress for outside recess as we aren't able to always provide the option of indoors and outdoors.
Recess is a great time for students to run around and enjoy time with their peers. All in all, our students have done a great job during this time. That being said, we have seen and helped students work through some conflict resolution. We talk about when conflict happens to communicate with each other, be respectful, and peacefully come to a conclusion. This is a great skill for students to learn not just on the playground but throughout their day-to-day interactions. We have seen significant improvements from the start of the year to now and our students continue to grow and learn in this area daily.
In closing, we look forward to a great second quarter with our 5th and 6th graders. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. We look forward to seeing you soon!

5th Grade Update
Language Arts:
Last week we finished our class read-aloud, Out of My Mind. This week we are reviewing various literary elements. Students should continue to study for their unit test, which will be next Wednesday, November 9th.
Math:
In 5th grade math, we finished our unit covering volume and multiplication, and will be moving on to Unit 2. Please keep an eye on the Online Agenda for additional information.
Science:
Students completed a quiz covering food chains last week, and began learning how overlapping food chains create food webs. We will continue to explore food webs in various regions of the world, as we prepare for a group project. Students will research a specific region to gather information on the consumers and producers of that region. They will use a “Food Web Project Guide” to help them collect and organize their data. For the final activity, students will design a food web based on the information they researched.
Social Studies: Students have been working hard and practicing knowing where all 50 states are located! They will take their 50 states test next week and continue working on their Google Slides mini-states project!6th Grade Update

The proceeds will be a benefit concert where students will compete for cash prizes in front of a panel of judges. In addition to the choirs you will hear many students showcase their musical talents.
