Rising Third Grade Summer Reading
Summer 2023
Summer Reading
The faculty of Wilmington Friends Lower School would like to assist you in helping your child develop a love of reading, writing and literature. We have gathered some titles, books that we know and find both appropriate and rewarding. We ask that each WFS child read (or be read to) consistently throughout the summer to foster their growing identities as readers. We recommend reading at a minimum three books as well as continuing the tradition of trying to read something every day. In addition, we have some suggestions for how to engage your child in writing over the summer.
Be assured that we are very aware of differing levels of reading skill and experience. For that reason, we understand that some books will be read by some children but read to others. Even if your child is already a fluent reader, it's still important to take the time to read to your child. Not only is it quality time, but you also model an engagement and enjoyment with stories that will last a lifetime! We have also included a list of questions that you can use to discuss the books with your children. We encourage you to join your children in these discussions for the many benefits they will provide your young reader. The list of suggested books is extensive and multi-leveled. We have updated and annotated these lists. Please link to our class wiki to share about books you have read.
Please allow your child a great deal of input in choosing books. Children are usually able to tell what is appropriate and interesting for them. Local bookstores and libraries have received these lists and should have these books.
As developing writers, one of the most challenging and important parts is to generate ideas for pieces of writing. Over the summer, students can do a number of activities to help in this step of the writing process:
Keep a journal of ideas and personal events
Take photographs or draw pictures
Gather artifacts of summer events– ticket stubs, postcards, brochures, etc.
If your child desires to do so, they can start and even complete stories using these artifacts or ideas. Another great writing activity is to write letters or e-mails to friends and family.
