Roberts Middle School
GRIT: Volume 20
Dear Roberts,
What is your story? Seriously, what do you say about yourself when you share who you are to others? Stories are basically the operating system of the human brain. Many people pay tons of money for therapists to fix their stories. It is our story in our head that keeps us going. Our personal narrative is deeply important for meaning, but also deeply important in terms of grit, resilience, and persistent. Do you describe yourself as a person who says, “I quit" or "I'm not a quitter”? What you say about yourself matters. You see Roberts; the power of a good story is that it is edited. Ultimately, it's up to you as the person telling yourself that story to decide what you leave in and what you leave out.
What does this mean for Roberts? If you want to feel like a better person, then start volunteering once a week. Go out and do it. Then, what will happen is that the story will follow. If you have trouble changing your story, first change your behavior. Don Quixote said, "If you want to be a knight, act like a knight."
The best part of working here at Roberts is that you can always edit your story. That is the power of the growth mindset. If you want to be a master teacher, act like a master teacher. What do master teachers do? Master teachers plan, collaborate outside of PLC, study data to pull small groups, and understand that all means all. If you want to be a person who brings joy, act like a person who brings joy.
Roberts, my advice for you is that you surround yourself with positive teachers, because it will be easier for editing purposes. Use the editing option often when you want more for your life. I edit my story daily to become the best version of me.
Edit for growth,
Jorly
