Why go to Yuzhno Sakhalinks, Russia

My contact person was Melissa and Doug Sturgis and they have lived in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia for 3 years now. I know them because when we lived in Malaysia, my sister and I went to school with their daughter and we met them at the school open house. They said that it is a normal weather week for them and it was warmer than last year.


Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is located slightly to the right of the continent of Russia. It is a little island above Japan that is closer to the north pole at 47 degrees north.

The average wind speed was in the high and low ones and in the low 10s/teens. The highest wind breeze was 14 miles an hour on Tuesday, February 24. The wind blows southwest.

The participation in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk included fog, rain, hail, and snow. They said they got somewhere in between 4 to 8 inches of snow on Monday, February 23. On Friday, February 27 they had a blizzard condition.


The average humidity did change in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. For most of the week, it was scattered around in the 80s, at times it would be in the low 80s and at other times it would be in the high 80s. The rest of the week was in the high 60s and high 70s.

In Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, It is spring right now. Their seasons start on the first instead of the twenty-first like. They said at the start of the season when all the snow starts to melt, everything is brown, grey and gross. They also said that you have to be careful where walk because there are no sewers or drainage systems so when a car comes by, they splash nasty water on you. All the snow starts to melt.


The highest temperature of the week was 36 degrees fahrenheit and the lowest temperature of the week was -11 degrees fahrenheit.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a small city in Russia, although it is the largest city on the island.
