Description:

Graphic Design is a class that teaches art and technology. In this class students will use design as a creative process in communication. Students will also explore various methods used to create and combine words, symbols, and images to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. Students will use the basic elements and principles of art, and also learn how to use the computer programs included in the Adobe Creative Suite CS5. This class teaches the basics of Graphic Design through an illustrative and corporate view.


Design is intelligence made visible.

Course Objectives:

Completing the Graphic Design program the student will:

Learn the basics of Successful Design.

Learn the "language" of visual design.

Learn to apply basic design concepts to Commercial Design.

Learn to creatively solve design problems.

Learn to manage design projects.

Learn to structure an ad campaign from a Graphic Designer's perspective.

Learn how to use Adobe Creative Suite CS5 (Illustrator, Indesign, and Photoshop)

Combine Art, Photography and Illustration.


Materials Needed:

A Sketchbook (unlined, bound drawing paper)

A folder for only Graphic Design papers and handouts

An SD card for photography.

Paper for notes, pencil and pens

USB drive (flash drive) – optional but very beneficial

Internet account (open)


Attendance and Make-up Work:

If you are absent, you are responsible to make up any missed work. Assignments missed due to an excused absence must be tuned in within a maximum of three days. Tests are to be made up at the earliest time possible. Assignments due the day that you are absent are due the day your return.


Late Work

• One of the things you must learn is how to meet a deadline. Most work is long-term and due dates are announced well ahead of time.

• Do not expect to get credit for late work. Meeting the deadline is part of the assignment.


Grade Weighting and Evaluation:

50% Projects (creative, unique, complex)

50% Lessons, Quick Exercises, Quizzes



Classroom Procedures:

• When you have finished your work and turned it in, then you should be doing one of two things:

1. exploring the software on your own

2. helping another student.

• No checking e-mail, surfing the web, doing work for other classes, etc.

• Do not talk while I am demonstrating.

• Quiet talking is acceptable while the class is working on projects. Loud talking is never acceptable.


Classroom Rules and Regulations

•Behave responsibly, politely, and professionally both in and out of the classroom.

•Take this class seriously. Use it as an opportunity to learn as much as you possibly can.

•Have fun. Be creative. Stretch your imagination. Explore your abilities. Ask questions. Try to figure things out. See what you can do.

•Please never touch your computer screen.

•When you leave, straighten up your work area, including returning chairs to appropriate positions.



All classes at THS strictly follow the student handbook. All students are given a handbook the first day of the school year. Students are expected to abide by those rules and regulations.
