Make Summer Count by Learning How to Help Students Manage Their Behavior
Are you looking for tools to help your students learn how to manage their social and emotional behaviors? Check out these sessions being offered at Summer Seminar on May 29th-30th at GHS.
Mental Health First Aid
Description: This session is open for all staff. Children and youth face and experience mental health challenges differently than adults. Symptoms of the same mental disorder can look different in children and adults. With early identification and early, appropriate support and intervention, many young people with mental health challenges can be helped. Information about the most prevalent disorders for children and young people and ways to assist students as you connect them with appropriate professional help in your building will be shared.

Restorative Practices
This session is limited to new teachers K, 3, This is initial training of the 6 components of Restorative Practices used in the district. Participants will understand and be able to effectively implement the 6 proactive tools to build and sustain relationships: treatment agreement, pulse/mood meter, 60-second relate break, 90-second spark, 2-minute connection, and GTKY (Get to Know You) circles. Members of the District Fidelity Team will be on-hand to provide coaching and information about their own experiences implementing these strategies.

5 Essential MTSS Tools for All Educators
Description: This session is open to all staff. These 5 early-intervention tools interrupt (and often resolve) behaviors which are becoming problematic. They require teacher self-reflection, a little time, and minimal documentation. The Denton ISD SEL MTSS protocol requires that these interventions be tried before bringing a student to an MTSS meeting for behavior.

Summer Learning to Support Units of Study Reading and Writing
We have some great summer learning opportunities available to us. Many of you have expressed a desire to launch Units of Study Reading and Writing next year. Check out these sessions being offered during Summer Seminar May 29th and 30th at GHS.
Units of Study Reading K-2- Lauren Willison and Jeremy Wells
Do you want to start the year off with your first reading unit planned? Bring your first reading unit for next year and you will learn how to effectively plan each unit while seeing an overview of the unit as a whole and how the sessions all go together. If possible, bring the first unit you will teach for reading.
New ELAR TEKS 3-5 - Tara Reed and Brittany Beck
They are finally here! New Language Arts TEKS implementation begins this fall (August, 2019). Get a jump start and dive into getting to know the new Texas standards. We will show an overview of the changes, compare the strands, and gain a deeper understanding of the new TEKS.
Making Conferring and Small Groups Work- Katie Payne and Kate Wright
In this session, we will look at the different types of conferences and small groups. We will discuss ways to plan for them in your classroom.
Routines for Reasoning Brenda Hill and Courtney Thompson
Instructional Routines are specific and repeatable designs for learning that support both the teacher and students in the classroom. In this session, we will focus on the routine Capturing Quantities. This is an instructional routine designed to focus students' attention on important quantities and relationships in problem situations. The goal of this routine is to develop students' ability to reason abstractly and quantitatively.

Math Workshop- Diana Boor and Shannon
Experience all the components of a Math Workshop plus creating a math growth mindset, conferring and student goal setting. Participants will leave with ideas that can be implemented Day 1 of the school year.
Conferring in Math Workshop-Erin Staniszewski
K-5 STEM Karen McPhereson and Kathy Morrison
Have you ever wondered what it looks like to talk with students about their mathematical thinking? If so, this session is for you. In the Moment offers a variety of strategies for conferring with students during math workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to practice conferring strategies, develop a math conferencing toolkit, and learn how conferencing fits into the math workshop to support student learning, communication, and participation.
This professional learning opportunity will allow participants to participate in STEM challenges, problems, designing, and redesigning for each specific grade level. You will learn to implement the Elementary Design Process while building conceptual knowledge. (GT Credit 3 hours)

You will need to have your classes selected by Thursday, May 9th so that you can complete a Google Form for Mr. Russell indicating the sessions you will attend and how that will impact your instruction for the upcoming school year. The Google form will be your entrance/exit ticket to the staff meeting.
