Expect Excellence In Everything
April 22, 2022
A Note from Mr. Bender
Our fourth grade students have done a fantastic job “showing what they know” on the math portion of the Milestones Assessment this week. Next week, third and fifth grade will take the Georgia Milestones Assessment. The district testing calendar is included below. If you have any questions related to Milestones testing, please contact your child’s teacher or our assistant principal over Milestones testing, Mrs. Nix.
Included below is also a handout from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta that details ways to reduce test anxiety in students. The best way to prepare your child for the assessment is to get a good night of sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time.
Hope to see you there!
Mike Bender
Principal

Students in grades 3-5 will take the Georgia Milestones Assessment beginning in April. This state assessment measures how well students have learned knowledge and skills in the core areas of language arts, mathematics, and science (grade 5 only). Schools are required to follow the district-established testing schedule. Digital learners must report to school to take the Milestones assessment on the days their grade level is testing. Please refer to the calendar below for testing dates.
The practice site below lets students see what testing online is like. Parents and educators are welcome to try it too. The items on the demonstration tests are general and are organized into three grade bands: Grades 3 – 5, Grades 6 – 8, and High School in the content areas of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The items do not necessarily represent the specific grade-level content that students learn daily in their classrooms. The primary purpose is to let students experience, firsthand, the functionality of the online testing platform. The sample tests are not graded, so have fun! Directions on using the practice site are also attached below.

Character Trait and Mindfulness Activity of the Month
Every month, we focus on a character trait to instill great character into our cubs. The character trait for the month of April is Fairness. Fairness means treating everyone with the same amount of respect and kindness. As a reminder, teachers will be choosing one student this month who has exhibited fairness the most to represent his/her class as the Cub of the Month.
Spotlight on SEL Picture Books
The Big Red Lollipop by Rukhsana Khan
Having to take her younger sister along the first time she is invited to a birthday party spoils Rubina's fun, and later when that sister is asked to a party and baby sister wants to come, Rubina must decide whether to help. This picture book focuses on positive ways to deal with sibling rivalry. The character traits of empathy, kindness, and compassion are shared throughout the story.
Reading Rewards
April will be the last month of the reading rewards program for this school year. April reading logs are due on or before Monday, May 2.
Monthly logs should reflect 20 different dates in the month, with at least 20 total minutes of reading for each date. Incomplete logs will not be accepted. Students can read independently or with their parents at home. After completing the monthly requirement, logs are returned to the homeroom teacher. Parent initials are required in order to verify the reading.
If you lose your log or find you need a replacement, monthly logs can be downloaded and printed from the media center link of the school website. Look for the Reading Rewards link on the left side of the media center website.
If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, refer to the reading rewards link on the media center page of the school website or contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.
