PHS Update for Families

September Edition

August is in the rearview mirror and September is here!

I hope everyone is doing well and excited about the upcoming school year. This enewsletter will be the first for this school year, with the goal of helping families be able to plan from month-to- month and to be informed about events happening on the PHS campus. All information found in our PHS Update will be useful for PHS families, whether they are enrolled on campus or virtually through PCVA. Important dates and key bits of information will be highlighted each month. All families are encouraged to continue to check our social media platforms for the most up-to-date information about what is happening on the PHS campus along with Schoology. Just becuase your student is in High School, please don't step away from checking on their grades and progress in their academic classes.

My name is Jeff Duncan and I am honored to be the new Principal at Pickens High School. As a member of the Class of 1998, I respect and honor the institution of PHS and the role that it plays in our local community. I'm excited in the days ahead to work alongside you as we support the most important resource in our community, our students. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns. I'm here to serve in anyway that I can to support your student on the PHS campus.

The most pressing issue at PHS at this moment is still COVID. I know we had all hoped this year would look and feel more like 2019, but it does not appear at this moment that will be the case. We are having a lot of members of the PHS Family impacted by COVID in our community. Please know that our teachers will work with all of our families to help keep students on track when they cannot be on campus. Regardless of what lies ahead, we'll work together to do what is best for our students and make it work.

Thank you for all that you do for the students of PHS!

Jeff Duncan

COVID Reminders for Families

Students who have any signs of illness must stay home. Students who are being tested for COVID cannot come to school while waiting on test results. If a student tests positive, contact the school nurse as soon possible by calling 397-3600. If there is someone in the home that has tested positive or a student has been in close contact with someone who has COVID, the student cannot come to school. Contact the school nurse about these situations as soon as possible to receive the date the student can return to school.
PHS Student Handbook

Have questions about the expectations for students at PHS? Please take a look at the PHS Student Handbook for details about the expectations for students on the PHS campus.

Cell Phone Reminders for Students at PHS

Realizing that cell phones are an integral part of the social and communication network of adolescents, the Faculty and Staff of PHS ask your help in making sure that students are present in mind and focused in the classrooms on the PHS campus. Families, please remind your students that cell phones are supposed to be turned off once entering the building and out-of-sight in classrooms and in hallways throughout the day. PHS students will be allowed to use their phones during lunch time, but other than that, they need to be out-of-sight. If a family needs to get an emergency message to their student, please call the Main Office at 397-3600 and the message will be passed along to your student in a timely manner. Families can also email or Schoology message their student if needed throughout the day. The use of cell phones has become a distraction to students on our campus and your assistance in reminding your student of the policy is appreciated. Violations of the SDPC Cell Phone include the following:

1st Offense: confiscation of the device; and, after a conference with the parent/legal guardian, the device will be returned to the adult.

2nd Offense: confiscation of the device; and, after a conference with the parent/legal guardian, the device will be returned to the adult after 14 calendar days.

3rd Offense: confiscation of the device; and, after a conference with the parent/legal guardian, the device will be returned after 60 calendar days.

4th and Subsequent Offenses: confiscation of the device and the device will be returned at the conclusion of the current academic year.

Headphones/earbuds etc. are not allowed in the halls or in classrooms unless being used directly for instruction with permission from the classroom teacher.

Thank you for your assistance as the Faculty and Staff of PHS work to provide a world-class education to our students in a classroom environment that is free of distractions and allows our students to be focused on the content being presented.

Please note this year we will be charging admission for Home Cross Country meets on campus at PHS. As a region, all schools will charge $5 per person to help offset expenses with travel to away meets.

We did move our Homecoming week to October 8. Be on the lookout for more information about this week as we approach it.

PHS Counselor Corner

The Senior Know: Last week, senior postcard reminders went out to parents in an effort to get IGP conferences scheduled. From the college admissions process, graduation requirements and financial aid, there is a lot to prepare for during the senior year. Please contact Mrs. Cudd at: ansleycudd@pickens.k12.sc.us or (864)397-3623 to get your Senior's IGP conference scheduled. This year we will be introducing the Diploma Pathways Endorsement initiative at the IGP conferences. More information to come on this initiative.

Accuplacer: Developed by the College Board, the Accuplacer assessment is an important part of our school's College Readiness Program. Colleges and technical schools use the Accuplacer to determine placement into various college level courses. This year, this assessment will be administered to all juniors on September 28th, 29th, 30th and October 1st. Juniors will be tested based on their Flame Friday group assignment. Whether your junior plans to attend a technical college after graduation or be a dual enrollment student with Tri-County Technical College as a senior, this assessment is important to that process

Sophomore Parents: You should have received an email with information about your sophomore's IGP meeting and you will also soon receive a postcard invitation with that same information. Please make sure to choose a meeting date/time through http://bit.ly/24PHS10.

Contact Mrs. Hulme if you need an alternate date/time not available through the Sign Up Link.

PSAT/NMSQT will be given on Wednesday, October 13 to Sophomores and Juniors. There are a limited amount of tests and registration will be given on a first come, first served basis. Registration will open on Monday, September 13 and the only way to register/pay is through MySchoolBucks. You will select "PSAT Test Fee" and pay the $19 to reserve your spot. Please do not come to Guidance to pay the fee, but do contact Mrs. Hulme with any questions. More information will be given closer to the test date.
