Join Ohio’s Adolescent Literacy Specialists, Rachel Lang Daniels and Roger Howard, as well as Ohio Literacy Leads, Carolyn Turner and Michelle Elia, for virtual professional learning sessions on a variety of adolescent literacy topics. Disciplinary Literacy for Adolescents
Disciplinary Literacy for Adolescents is an interactive workshop that will explore how content specializations can be used to do the authentic work found within each discipline. From insightful research to literacy practices, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of disciplinary literacy and the role it plays in building content knowledge. Disciplinary Literacy: Implementation
Disciplinary Literacy for Adolescents: Implementation: Building from Disciplinary Literacy for Adolescents, this session intends to create a space to consider and plan for implementation of disciplinary literacy practices across a school. Using Collaborative Coaching for DL: Strategies to Support Teachers in Grades 6-12, participants will explore how to create disciplinary literacy outcomes and create an implementation plan. Attention will be paid to ways in which pedogeological content knowledge (PCK) can be built. Target Audience: Teachers, building coaches, teacher leaders, building and district administration, educational service center/state support team consultants.

Instructional Frameworks to Support Successful Adolescent Literacy Instruction. Unlike elementary schools, the structures of secondary schools have traditionally not been designed for universal literacy instruction. This two-hour workshop will explore the use of common instructional frameworks and routines as a means of advancing the evidence-based practices of adolescent literacy. Beyond Textbooks - Incorporating Complexity and Evidence-Based Practices Through Text Sets: At the root of the grades 6-12 literacy standards and adolescent evidence-based practices is a focus on complex text. Text sets can serve as a means for scaffolding complex text for all learners while also building background knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, and motivation for literacy tasks. This two-hour workshop will review a framework for creating text sets, and also explore examples of existing text sets. Target Audience: Teachers, building and district administrators, instructional coaches, state support team/educational service center consultants.

Motivating and Engaging Adolescents in Literacy Learning
Motivating and Engaging Adolescents in Literacy Learning is not only one of the Big Ideas of Secondary Reading, it is a recommended evidence-based practice for classroom instruction (I.E.S. Practice Guide, 2008). Participants in this three-hour workshop will examine the research and recommended practices for enhancing intrinsic student motivation and engagement in literacy tasks.
