Restorative Practices, part 2
This second semester we have added circles to our Restoratives Practices approach to discipline. Talking Circles are a core component of the restorative justice process. Students enter the conversation, a talking circle, sometimes called a peacemaking circle, to discuss their feelings and thoughts. Teachers use a structural framework in the circles to build relationships and to address conflict within the classroom community. We are seeing students take responsibility and seek resolution with their peers as we are putting these practices in place.
2nd quarter Sock Hops
All students that were present during the 2nd quarter were invited to a sock hop in the cafeteria on the first Friday in January. Students enjoyed dancing and eating popcorn with their friends. I heard students remark as they left, "I will never be absent again." Attendance has remained steady at 96% the last few years but we are trying to reach our goal of 97% this year.
Latino Family Literacy Project
We kicked off our first night of the Latino Family Literacy Project on January 28. We had 20 parents attend with 19 students in childcare. We were delighted to see such great participation! We are planning our first Lunch and Learn with our ELL parents on February 11. Topics discussed will be Telpas and STAAR testing, getting involved in the school community, and building a partnership with the school to help their students be successful.
"It's Nacho Normal Math Night!"
We are busy planning our Math night on February 7. We are doing it in conjunction with the 100th day of school. Students can design a t-shirt with 100 things and wear it to school that day. That evening we will have games, prizes, and activities and ideas for parents to do at home to help their students in Math. We will serve nachos in the cafeteria as well.
