South Union Rails
Respectable, Responsible and Ready to Learn
A letter from our Principal
December 2018
Dear Parents and Citizens of the South Union School Community:
Greetings from SU as winter and the Holiday season is here and a very exciting time for all. We had a short Thanksgiving break and now we are back in session for three weeks before winter break – it all seems to go so fast. With that being said, SU is so proud of its students and the hard work that is happening every day at school and in every classroom.
Listed below are recent celebrations at SU and thanks to all of you for supporting the school:
· Over 500 parents and students attended Math/Literacy Night as we shared a meal together, and students with family participated in math and literacy activities in classrooms.
· Book Fair was a huge success – thanks parents for supporting the school and literacy.
· Daily student attendance at SU is averaging about 95% per day – very good for a school with over 500 students.
· SU Safe – respectful, responsible, and ready to learn. We work on this everyday with students and we are seeing social and emotional growth in all aspects of student development.
A time of appreciation and giving is always upon us every holiday season: we are always thinking about our families and making sure, we try to help when we can. If you are a family that might need assistance with support for yourself or your children, we have resources available that you can contact and express your need or concern. South Union has two Success Workers and a full-time School Counselor on board whom you can reach out to if needed. Please contact the school (515) 242-8409 and we will gladly help you if possible.
Colder weather is here and warmer clothing recommended for students – we monitor the weather and wind chill at SU every day to determine if we are staying inside or going outside for recess time. Students enjoy outdoor recess and want to participate as much as possible. We need your help in making sure your child comes to school wearing a jacket, hat, mittens or gloves, and snow pants/boots when necessary. If we observe a student not wearing the appropriate clothing to stay warm during recess, we keep them inside until the recess period is over.
As always, thanks so much for your support. It means the world to us that we have supportive families that believe in SU and allow us the opportunity to teach your child. Best wishes for a fun-filled December.
Warmest regards,
Dr. Bill Szakacs
Principal
