FROM THE PRINICIPAL
April 1, 2023
Silver Lake Families,
In the March newsletter, we shared some information regarding ways that Silver Lake families could provide input and share their opinions by completing the Panorama Stakeholder Survey. We greatly appreciate the feedback we received from families that completed the survey, but also want to remind everyone of the ongoing opportunity for increased two-way communication using the SLE Parent Survey that will be open all year long so you can submit your responses at any time.
March was a busy month here at Silver Lake. The spring play, The Lion King, was presented three times by Silver Lake students under the direction of our amazing music teacher, Heather (Baker) Shropshire. The actors/singers put on a fantastic show for their fellow students during a daytime assembly and then performed to a packed house for two evening performances. We are so proud of our talented students and greatly appreciate our dedicated staff and volunteers who made this all possible.
We also completed our second round of parent/teacher conferences in March. We had excellent participation for these important meetings where we come together to share information and celebrate the academic and social emotional growth of our students. We hope you all had the opportunity to attend our spring conferences and we encourage ongoing participation in your child’s learning experiences here at Silver Lake.
As we move into April, we truly hope you enjoy the week of Spring Break with your family and we look forward to seeing you again in May when we are hosting two more family engagement events:
- STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Night: 5/11 (6:00-7:00)
- Multi-cultural Night: 5/25 (5:45-7:15)
Please enjoy some fun photos from The Lion King performances and Silver Lake staff enjoying school spirit days in March.
In partnership,
Silver Lake Principal, Theresa Campbell

ATTENDANCE
Silver Lake Elementary School, in partnership with families and community, is dedicated to preparing each student for academic, social, and personal success through individualized, relevant, rigorous, aligned, and engaging instruction through the lens of equity. We are continuing our partnership with families to make sure that all students are at school, on time, very day. Did you know that if your child misses more than 18 days in a given school year that this is chronic absenteeism? Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves. Here are some tips to increase your child’s attendance:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- Try scheduling medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
STATE TESTING at SLE
We would like to notify you about the testing window for the upcoming SBA assessment (grades 3, 4, and 5) in April-May 2023. For more specific dates, please, contact your child’s classroom teacher. The students are going to use headsets provided by the district and school. Please, make sure that your child’s device provided by the district is fully charged every day. State testing is required by state law (RCW 28A.230.095(link is external)) and federal law (Elementary and Secondary Education Act).
Statewide testing is important because it helps ensure all public school students receive a quality education, no matter where they go to school, because they are measured to equal standards. This information assists districts and schools in improving instructional practices and curriculum and gives families valuable information about how their student is doing in school and where additional help might be needed.
Test results are one piece of information about how your student is doing in school. Together with report cards and other information, test results let you know if your student is on track to succeed in higher grades as well as for college and career. For students in grade 10, these results are used by some community colleges in Washington to measure if students are on track for college-level classes.
You can help your child be ready for testing by:
- Marking the testing dates on your calendar (see the calendar below) and planning your preparations;
- Ensuring your child gets a good amount of sleep the night before the test;
- Having your student eat a nutritious and filling breakfast;
- Ensuring your student is on time on the day of testing;
- Setting a backup alarm to avoid the possibility of oversleeping;
- Contacting the school right away if your child is sick on the day of testing.
Мы хотели бы уведомить наши семьи, что в апреле-мае 2023 ученики 3, 4, и 5 классов будут сдавать гос экзамен на математики, природоведения и чтения.
Вы можете помочь вашему ребенку следующим образом:
- Знать даты тестирования вашего ребенка;
- Убедиться, чтобы ребенок хорошо отдохнул и выспался накануне теста;
- Накормить плотным завтраком;
- Привезти детей во время в школу;
- Marque las fechas de las pruebas en su calendario (vea el calendario preparado a continuación) y planifique sus preparativos;
- Asegúrese de que su hijo duerma bien la noche anterior a la prueba;
- Hacer que su estudiante coma un desayuno nutritivo y abundante;
- Asegurarse de que su estudiante llegue a tiempo el día de la prueba;
- Configurar una alarma de respaldo para evitar la posibilidad de quedarse dormido;
- Comunicarse con la escuela de inmediato si su hijo está enfermo el día de la prueba.

THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS!
April 17-21 is Public Schools Volunteer Appreciation Week, which provides a yearly opportunity for schools and families to honor and highlight the powerful contributions parents and caregivers provide at school and home to support student success.
We are grateful for the support our school community volunteers have given to support student success. Your help matters. Thank you so much.
HAPPY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL WEEK, DR. K
We love Dr. K!
Silver Lake has been so lucky to have Dr. Irina Kourilenko as our Assistant Principal this year. Not only does she have the best outfits, she also helps connect us as a staff and Silver Lake community through her connections and relationships that she intentionally builds with everyone. Thank you, Dr. K for all your hard work and dedication in making Silver Lake Elementary a great place to work and learn.

FROM THE PTA
Silver Lake Elementary PTA 7.3.45
Newsletter - March 2023
2023-2024 PTA BOARD POSITIONS OPEN: We currently have no elected officers and no nominees for our PTA Board next year. If you weren’t already aware, this means that as of today we have NO OPERATING PTA AT OUR SCHOOL FOR THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR. This means there will not be anybody to plan and finance events and programs like Bingo, school dance, yearbook, or even teacher grants to help your staff provide the best learning experience possible for your student. If we do not have a Board of Directors next year, PTA (a legal, non-profit organization that requires a Board of Directors to operate) will no longer be able to operate at SLE. Please help us avoid this. Volunteering as a member of the Board of Directors for SLE is easy, fun, and fulfilling. Contact us today for more information about the four main Board seats - President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. All positions come with training from WA State PTA and your outgoing Board will always be available for questions. Please, help us continue operating PTA in our school! For more information contact us or check out www.silverlakepta.weebly.com.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: If you would enjoy helping out with any PTA sponsored events (see our website, or ask your student’s teacher), please know that even just 30 minutes of your time makes a HUGE difference and truly positively impacts the lives of our students! There’s no minimum time commitment required for volunteers, you don’t have to serve on our Board of Directors, and there is a lot that can be done from home. We are currently looking for help with the school dance on April 14th. Please contact us for more information.
YEARBOOKS: We have begun selling Yearbooks! Order forms went home in backpacks.
PTA AWARDS: Each year, the Silver Lake Elementary PTA presents three awards to deserving volunteers and staff. We would like YOU to participate in the selection of our award recipients! Please take a minute to nominate deserving individuals for the awards - click the link to the online form on our website at www.silverlakepta.weebly.com.
Our April meeting is Thursday, April 27th at 7pm in the school cafeteria.
REPORTING ABSENCES
ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES: ABSENCES See Board Policy 3122P If a student is absent from school, the parent/legal guardian must email silverlakeattendance@everettsd.org to report the date and reason for the absence. If an email or phone call is not received by the office within 24 hours of the absence, the absence will be documented as unexcused.
