Grace Abbott Elementary

Principal: Dr. Erik Chaussee,

Secretary: Cindy Wrenn,

Covid update 9/24

This week we had a positive case of a staff member which brings our total for the year to seven cases total with five students and two staff members since the start of the year. Since the teacher was here while having Covid the entire class has to mask for two weeks which is 10 school days. Unfortunately, the district, like most districts has been having trouble getting substitute teachers. A variety of us, myself included, taught kindergarten on Wednesday. It makes me appreciate all the teachers more. The teacher will be gone eight days and we have the days covered. I also appreciate the response from parents who informed their kids to wear masks.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, I want to remind parents again of what could happen and want to avoid:

  • If one (1) confirmed case of COVID-19 has occurred in a classroom, all others in the class are required to mask for FOURTEEN (14) days following the last unmasked exposure which is what the first paragraph is about.

  • If two (2) or more classrooms in a school are closed due to COVID-19 transmission within a 14 day period, ALL students and staff in the school will be required to wear a mask at all times in the school building for TWO (2) incubation periods (TWENTY-EIGHT (28) days) following the second class closure. Closed means all the students are out due to three cases in the same classroom within 14 days.

The pollinator garden is putting on its last big show for the growing season: black-eyed susans are still exploding, the asters welcome migrating insects and birds, drops of amethyst hang on to the purple prairie clover, and blobs of white hide near the ground of the slender mountain mint. If you have a chance, stop by to see, smell, and hear the life of our little patch of “wild”. The fence will only be up for this year to prevent rabbits from party-crashing. Imagine if all of the school’s lawn was prairie...what kind of adventures could you have?

We’re scheduled to start composting lunch waste this coming week. To understand this change, we’ve been discussing the amount of waste our school creates (around twenty-five 65-gallon trash bags PER DAY) and how to decrease the amount that ends up in landfill. During lunch, we’ll be sorting our waste in landfill (the stuff that can’t or won’t break down) and compost (the stuff that can be turned into nutrient-rich soil).

If either of these projects interests you and you’d like to get involved (or just come along for the ride!), contact Mr. Lesiak at
