Message from Jeff and Yolanda
Before the actual visit to the Everglades there was many behind the scene work that took place Students learned first hand the importance collaboration, persistence, organization, and just what the word "giving" is all about. The first piece of the puzzle to this project began as a lesson about effective use of social media and how networking can be very beneficial when trying to send a message. The students' voices were heard thanks to Rick Ponton and the multimedia class that helped create a video about the class mission. The instructors of Project Explore posted the YouTube video and from there it was shared out by others. The students were able to communicate about the project in person to community members, family, and friends. This created an ideal situation for the students as they were able to work on interpersonal skills. They clearly conveyed the message to those around them as they collectively raised $2,700 with a goal of $ 1,500. They certainly raised the bar! Once donations were collected they exhibited what collaboration should look like! They worked together to research families in need, items needed, and how to budget the funds! Overall, the class learned a lot and helped our community!

Coaches Corner
Across all curriculums each of us deal with the same body of students. We depend on Language arts to teach the kids reading and writing, Math to teach statistics, algebra and geometry, Science to think critically and scientifically, Social Studies to teach economics and government and history. There is often so much to focus on in each curriculum it is hard to add one more thing. Yet we all know that industry certifications, end of course exams in addition to FSA's are quite often reading tests and students that can read fluently in the content are successful. This is natural for language arts but for those of us that do not teach language arts, give annotations a try. Annotations have been proven via research to be effective. It does not require an extensive training for you or students and can be embedded using material you already have. There are many different ways to annotate a text and the following is just one way that works well in science.
1) Teach the kids how to read in your content area. science text is formatted different with each main idea being highlighted at the start of each paragraph and the following paragraph supporting.
2) Underline the main idea
3) Number the supporting points of the main idea
4) Circle key words
5) Draw a small picture for a process
Give it a try. Use your own text, teach the kids how to annotate and watch the results. We have already noticed a big difference in biology. Check out the article on annotations https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/reading-techniques-help-students-master-science/
