February 1, 2019 - Week 21

Dear Parents:

Many of you have asked me, after our challenges with phones and social media, how you can monitor what your child is doing on their cell phones. Monitoring software has gotten better and better, so it is worth taking a look at.

Giving your child an unmonitored phone is like putting them in the middle of New Youk City with no guide. Monitoring software simply lets you see what they are doing and who they are interacting with.

On a weekly basis, we deal with online bullying, inappropriate images, social shaming, and sexting. Please keep an eye on what your kids are doing and saying online. The most typical comment we get from parents when we call them about these issues is, "I had no idea!"

Keeping your kids safe is our first priority... and that includes online.

Thank you-

Timely Vaping Information:

We hate to admit it, but vaping has become prevalent in our community... in high schools for sure, but we also are seeing it in middle schools. Educating yourself about what to look for is key! Here is a very good article from US News and World Report that tells you what to look for. But what to do if your child is vaping? The article below gives you some practical suggestions on how to handle the issue.

But the most important thing you can do today is to have an open and honest conversation with your child about vaping and your expectations. That is step one to keeping your child healthy.

When your child vapes, what's a parent to do?

Introverts:

Last year I included this in our FF, but I thought it was worth sending again. The article was updated this summer with some new thinking about how we teach introverts. It is worth the read considering that 25%+ of our kids are introverts! Enjoy the read!

Morning Yoga~

We are going to start Morning Yoga for our students at Wredling. Why yoga?

Yoga helps kids to:

  • Develop body awareness
  • Learn how to use their bodies in a healthy way
  • Manage stress through breathing, awareness, meditation and healthy movement
  • Build concentration
  • Increase their confidence and positive self-image
  • Feel part of a healthy, non-competitive group
  • Have an alternative to tuning out through constant attachment to electronic devices

Please click here to complete a Google Form to show interest and learn more.

Attention 8th Grade Parents:

On February 20th and 21st, all 8th-grade students will have their vision screened in accordance with the Illinois Department of Public Health's school code. If you have submitted a vision exam from your child's eye doctor in the last year, we will use those results rather than screen your child. If your child has had a recent eye exam but you have not yet turned it into the Health Office please send it in so that we can use those results and include the exam in your child's health file. Please make sure your child has his eyeglasses with him at school on these screening dates. Thank you for your assistance in this process.
