Ferdinand Magellan:
Circumnavigating the Globe
WHO IS HE?
Ferdinand Magellan was born in Sabrosa Municipality, Portugal on October 12, 1492. In fact, this is the day that Christopher Columbus first discovered the New World. How ironic!
WHY IS HE IMPORTANT?
Ferdinand Magellan was the Portuguese explorer accredited for making the first voyage around the world. By doing so, he proved that the Earth was round and not flat, as previous explorers thought.
WHAT DID THEY FIND?
Magellan and his crew on three ships sailed around the globe, but not the ordinary way. Instead, he traveled west and discovered a way through Panama Canal, which made getting to Asia easier. The Pacific Ocean, which he named after his daughter, was another of his many findings along the voyage.
WHEN DID THEY GET THERE?
Magellan's expedition across the globe was completed on February 29, 1562. However, Magellan died of old age months before the trip was completed, and , therefore, did not live to see his accomplishment. Due to his strong willpower and determination, he provided the basic theory of the Earth that still exists today!
