District 158 Young Author’s

Does your child like to write? The Young Author’s program is a great opportunity for our Kindergarten through 8th grade students. The students who participate will have their books judged. One book will be chosen to represent each school in the state conference on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Entries will be due to your child’s school by February 26th. Watch for more information to come in newsletters.

This week we worked on many skills during literacy. Homophones, helping verbs, fact and opinion, and Greek roots were our main focus. Students are doing a great job identifying sentences of opinion!

This week in math we practiced measuring to the nearest quarter inch, practiced rounding large numbers, and reviewed the rest of Unit 5. The students will be taking a test on Tuesday, January 12th. We have already gone over the study guide answers, and students have that as a tool to help them study. Students should continue practicing their multiplication facts each night for at least 5 minutes.

We are doing amazing things in science! This week students worked on creating a car that will hold a real egg. Next week we will send the car down a ramp that will crash into a wall. Students are putting a lot of thought into their designs and will be testing before we use a real egg.

The money raised through this fundraiser goes to support our PE and Music departments and buys supplies for instruction that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to provide, like our rock climbing wall to build upper body strength in PE and mallet instruments in music class.

You can also visit their websites to find complete listings of participating products and other ways you can participate.
