Message from Jeff and Yolanda
We hope you had a relaxing break and have come back energized. Our students are so fortunate to have a group of educators who get to know them and are always looking for opportunities for them. Such is the case with Love Pierre who completed the Phlebotomy program in the fall and is currently in the Practical Nursing Program. He was honored at the Rotary Club of Naples with a full scholarship to complete his nursing program and a coach to help him navigate through school and life. Below is the recommendation from Workforce Education Advisor Lynne Bruce followed by his story:
Love’s dynamic and engaging personality, along with his fortitude for excellence, was evident during our conversations about his career goals. His candidness, along with his perseverance to overcome obstacles this past year to become a full-time college student, is a testament to his character and diligence. Recognized for his spark and desire to improve his future through education lead us to select Love as one of the students highlighted in our 2018 LWTC Recruitment video. Love truly embodies the integrity, spirit and drive of what we strive to see in every Lorenzo Walker Technical College student.
In closing, as a veteran educator, I recognize the significant impact of a college scholarship and I am confident Love Pierre will be both a grateful recipient and inspirational representative for the Learn 2 Earn Program.
My name is Love Pierre, I am 21 years old. I was born and raised in Haiti by a single father. When I came to the U.S last year, I had nothing and I’ve struggled a lot because neither mom or dad was there to support me. I was homeless and living in a shelter. I used to take a bus from Immokalee at 3 or 4 in the morning to get to the day labor sites to pay the shelter fee and buy food. In the time I spent at the shelter I knew I had to better my life, that is why I ended up saving every penny I was able to buy a used car. In a short period, I was able to find a stable full-time job and a place of my own. I did not stop there. I knew I needed to better my life and it was then that I made plans for my future (Plans to go to school and get education). I enrolled in the Phlebotomy program at Lorenzo Walker Technical College, shortly after I started the License Practical Nursing program. Today I dream bigger than yesterday, I want to see myself in scrubs performing surgeries.
My education is the key to reach my goals and never return to where I started. I have come this far and I know that with perseverance I will reach my ultimate goal which is become a doctor. I want to say thank you to Lord Jesus for guiding me every day, Lorenzo Walker Technical College for supporting and recommending me for this awesome scholarship.
To be considered for a Learn2earn award is an honor and a privilege, so thank you so much The Rotary Club of Naples. God bless America!!!
Love Pierre is a testament that anything is possible when you are willing to sacrifice and commit to meeting a goal.
Coaches' Corner - 3 Truths and 1 Lie
Ice breaker, team building activity, think of 3 things about yourself that are true and one thing that is a lie. Try to make the lie sound reasonable and try to make the truths unbelievable. This is a fun game that can stretch your imagination.
You can apply this clever strategy to a classroom review activity or even a formative assessment.
Write 3 truth and 1 lie about.....
- Paralleograms
- Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet
- Events of WWII
- Habitats of Sharks
- Microsoft Excel features
After your students have created their list, ask them to exchange with a partner. This is the true formative assessment! Can your partner distinguish the facts from the falsehood? Students who have mastered the critical content of your conceptual unit will be successful in distinguishing the fact from the fiction.
This clever and quick activity will engage even the resistant learner! Give it a try and enjoy that laughter with will sure to ensue!
VSA Vaccination clinic
The students did a fantastic job on what turned out to be a very busy day. We began setting up at 11:30 with the clinic starting at 12:30. There were already 20 people in line when we arrived at 11:30. The clinic was scheduled to end at 3:30 but there were still about 40 people with their pets waiting to be seen. All were vaccinated. I don’t have the total numbers yet, but should get a report in the next couple of weeks.

Welcome our new Automotive Service Technology Instructor
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Robert S Vachunek and I come to you from Jacksonville FL where I taught automotive and diesel technology. Prior to living in Jacksonville my family and I resided in Nashville TN where I taught automotive technology to high school students for over nineteen years. I have worked as an automotive technician for more than thirty years and have found it to be very fulfilling. I have enjoyed teaching the skills that have made me successful and intend on using the same skills to build the greatest automotive technology program in the state of Florida. With the help of my new colleagues we can put our students to work in an environment that has a demand greater than thirty thousand nationwide, this makes it possible for our students to go anywhere and find great earning potential.
