Adopt a Family Program for the Holidays
With the Other People Matter Mindset, Glengary will be adopting families this holiday season. We will be setting up a Holiday tree decorated with tags in the shape of ornaments. Each tag will have an item needed for the families we adopt. Permission slips will be coming home with students on 12/2 and will need to be brought back in order for students to select a tag from the tree. Gifts will be due back to Glengary no later than 12/13.
Please see the below Sign Up Genius to help us make this program a success. We need many volunteers to make this program a success so please consider donating your time.
Media Center Help Needed
Mr. Hester is looking for adult volunteers to help in the library on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Volunteers will help shelve and organize the books. Additionally, volunteers may be asked to help repair books and help complete an inventory. If you are interested, please contact Mr. Hester at JohnHester@wlcsd.org
Plastic bags Needed
Mr. Hester is requesting plastic grocery bags for a STEM activity. The media center is in need of a ton of plastic bags for the project. We will be up-cycling the plastic bags. Please send in any donations you have with your child. THANK YOU!!!

What? Speech, essay, picture, poem, drawing, video, or any other way you choose to express yourself.
How?
Express the theme, Look Within: “Be the Change You Wish To See in the World” in your own unique way. There are lots of possibilities for creating a project. It can be a piece of writing, music, art, or other visual that shows how you want to make a positive change and/or impact in the world.
Fill out an entry form (see back) and attach your entry to the form.
Why? We are looking for entries for our annual Walled Lake Schools MLK Day Celebration on Monday, January 20, 2020. Selected entries will be presented on stage that evening..
When? Turn in your entry to your school’s office by Friday, December 6, 2019.
Details
Our keynote speaker at the MLK Celebration is Dr. Jay Marks. Jay B. Marks, Ph.D. is a widely-respected educator who has been in education since 1991. He is highly sought after for his work in the areas of Social Justice, Cultural Competence, Courageous Conversations about Race, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Educating African American Males, Student Engagement, and Differentiated Instruction. In addition to his professional work in the field of education, he has been mentoring youth since 1989, and has started several mentoring programs in the Metropolitan Detroit Area as a result of his experiences.
** The theme aligns well with the Reflections theme, meaning students could potentially submit the same project for both purposes.

Positivity Project
The character card which defines Gratitude and explains why it matters is attached below. I encourage you to print this card and use it as tool to reinforce the strength of perspective at home.
Gratitude is when you are aware of and thankful for good things that happen.
Some ideas for families at home to support gratitude include:
Read the story, My Gratitude Jar by Kristen Wiens, and create a Family Gratitude Jar. Have each family member write on 5 pieces of paper what/whom they are grateful for. Put the papers in a jar and pull from the jar each night. Have a conversation each night surrounding the topic that was pulled.
Have your child write notes to family members, friends, coaches, teachers, etc. Tell the person why you are grateful for them.
Model gratitude by telling your child why you are grateful for them. Point out to them when good things happen, and when you are doing something that someone else will be grateful for.
Some books that will help support the Gratitude character strength are:
*Those Shoes-Maribeth Boelts
* Bear Says Thanks- Karma Wilson
*Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?- Dr. Suess
