Monday Memo - May 23, 2022
Our Washburne Student Leadership group has met faithfully throughout the year before school at 7:45am. We wanted to highlight their dedication and draw attention to a current fundraiser they are hosting. Last week, 8th graders had the opportunity to purchase ice cream during advisory and this Tuesday, May 24th our 7th graders will have the same opportunity.
All proceeds go to our student-selected fundraising project (PICKLES) and Ukraine support organization (Sunflowers of Peace). Thank you to our student leadership members for organizing this event.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal
Principal Coffee with Incoming Superintendent
Dr. Tess is looking forward to connecting and listening to your hopes for the District, thoughts on areas in which you think we may improve, and ideas on how we can best partner together on behalf of our students as we plan for the 2022-2023 school year.
School Supplies and KW Uniforms
It is time to order your school supply kits for the 2022-23 school year. The deadline for ordering is July 1st. Supply kits will be delivered to your home two weeks before the start of school in August. CLICK HERE to order.
Next year, our 7th and 8th Graders will need a KW uniform daily. We are partnering with an online vendor, to ensure uniforms arrive by the start of the school year. Students will need a pair of shorts and a KW shirt and we encourage students to purchase sweats for colder weather. The uniform store will be open for online orders until June 9th.
Please make sure to order your uniform to ensure it arrives by the beginning of the school year. Washburne KW Uniform Link
Park District Traffic Reminder
Please remember that the traffic circle immediately outside of the Winnetka Park District Administrative Offices is not intended to be a waiting area for drop off or pick up. There are signs displayed that read “No Parking / Stopping / Standing / Any Time” in the traffic circle. Recently, cars waiting in that area have caused a backup of traffic through the parking areas and, on occasion, up to Hibbard Road. All drop off/pick-ups of students should take place on the north side of Oak Street or the south side of Elm Street.
Additionally, please remember that if you are picking up your child early, they must sign out through the main office. Please call the office or buzz the front door to let us know when you are here to pick up your child.
Window to Washburne
As our 8th graders wind down the year and prepare for graduation, students on Team Possibility are participating in an interdisciplinary debate unit. English and social studies classes have combined to meet in the resource center to research, write arguments, and prepare to debate their opponents. Students are grappling with real-world topics including the conflict in Ukraine, name, image, and likeness (NIL) limits, and military spending. As part of the unit, students on both sides of each issues share their ideas with one another so that they can effectively write counter-arguments for their topics. As an added bonus, parents will be invited to attend the final debates this year.
Kudos to Mr. Barraca and Mr. Hovis for ending the year on such a high note for our students.
What's Happening in Related Studies
We are so proud of the accomplishments our small but mighty CW Chorus made this year! Having just given their second live concert, they are celebrating a year with 3 concerts, a Division I Rating at the IGSMA Festival, not to mention new friendships formed as well as fun and laughs making music together. We look forward to more live performances next year, including (hopefully) the New Trier Township Junior High Choral Festival and a Winnetka tour. Congratulations to the CW Chorus and to Ms. Scott, for her great work with our students!
It’s not too late to catch a live performance! CW’s Musical Theatre students will be presenting their show, a Broadway Revue, on Tuesday, May 31st at 7:30 in the Little Theatre. We hope you will join us for an evening of songs ranging from heartfelt, to humorous, to toe-tapping, and to see the fantastic sets, lights, costumes, and sound that Stagecraft students have crafted to complete the experience!
Is there more? Yes! Trimester 3 Guitar & Piano students are delving into some personal choice songs to practice over these final few weeks of school. We are using the skills we’ve acquired thus far to figure out songs we want to play, so that when we leave Ms. Scott’s class, we can still go into our “toolbox” to make music, play a melody, strum an accompaniment. Look for details of the class “informance” where students will casually share some of their favorite tunes.
SHIELD Testing Ends the Week of May 31st
As we are nearing the end of the school year, SHIELD testing will stop the week of May 31st.
