Did you know that the CAASPP website has student writing exemplars that can be used in teaching?
The CAASPP Hand Scoring materials are semi-secure, which means they can be used in instruction but they CANNOT be posted publicly or sent home. You can use them in a variety of ways. Students can:
- "reverse engineer" the samples on a writing rocket
- identify and color-code various parts of the exemplar (for example: topic sentence, transitions, concluding statement, etc.)
- score the exemplars based on the rubric
- determine what is "missing" or what can be added to improve the score
The CAASPP Hand-Scoring Training Guides can be found by logging in and following this click path:
Resources ----> Interim Assessments ----> Hand Scoring Training Guides and Exemplar
- From there, you will select your grade-level and scroll down to find the Training Guide and Exemplars (see below)
- Training Guide- includes the prompt, rubric, and sources (text)
- Exemplars- include samples of writing for each rubric score, as well as a check-set to calibrate scoring.
Task Information:
Includes grade, title, claim, target, standards, rubric scores
Student Writing Sample
Includes actual example of what a student wrote in response to the item stem (prompt/task). There are multiple exemplars included for every task and every rubric score.
Commentary
Includes the rubric score and a commentary about why the response received that score.

New and Rising Star Teacher Feature
Meet CAYLIE LARKIN from Discovery!
This month, we would like to shine the spotlight on Caylie Larkin. Discovery's Instructional Coach, Tamara Konya, had this to say:
"Caylie is a go-getter! She has a great rapport with her students, parents, and staff! Her students are very successful in small group instruction despite the large number of students in her class. She utilizes her para appropriately to maximize student learning."
We asked Caylie a few questions too... here's what she had to say:
1. Tell me about your most memorable day in the classroom.
My most memorable day in the classroom was in my first year of teaching during the 2017-2018 school year. Many of you may remember that in 2017 three things were on kid’s minds: the floss, Fortnite, and slime! That’s all my students seemed to talk about and my collection of confiscated slime was growing daily. I was teaching second grade in San Diego and we were studying states of matter in science and opinion writing. In an attempt to integrate, my team and I thought we would bring a little joy to our students while teaching them a few things along the way. The students knew the properties of solids and liquids and could sort items based on this…but what about slime? So we posed the question to our students and debate ensued. They conducted an experiment making slime enhanced with few extra ingredients like glitter and food dye. After the experiment they worked together to write pieces arguing why they think slime is either a solid or a liquid. It was a bit of a trick question since slime is a non-Newtonian fluid because its ability to flow is not constant. At the end of the day, our students left with baggies of slime, full brains, and big smiles!
2. What is your must-have classroom item?
This may seem unconventional but my must-have classroom item is my Apple Watch. You may not think of a smart watch as a classroom item but to be honest, I don’t know how I taught without it! I use it for everything from setting timers for PLT stations, timing transitions, staying on schedule, playing music, and seeing email notifications from the office even when out for P.E.
3. If you could have one teacher super-power, what would it be?
If I could have one teacher super-power, it would definitely be self-duplication or cloning. Imagine being able to meet with 5 small groups at the same time! Now that’s differentiation!
