November 2019
Kindergarten Update
We are learning lots of things in kindergarten! In reading, your children will become superheroes! We will be learning that we have super powers that can help us learn to read. We will be working on pointer, picture, pattern, and think about it powers just to name a few. This is always a favorite unit of kindergarteners. In writing, we will be working on patterned books. We will actually make our own pattern books during the month of November.
In math, we will be working on measurement and comparing data. We will measure our own name and then compare it to our friends' names. We will continue to play roll and record, grab and count and compare.
In Social Studies, we will learn about the First Thanksgiving. We will compare the First Thanksgiving to our modern day Thanksgiving. In Science, we will continue to work on forces of motions.
1st Grade Update
November is a month of Thanksgiving and first grade is most thankful for the wonderful families at Page! This month we will be talking about holiday traditions and celebrations. We will also look at how things have changed over time from the Colonial times until now. All of this to get us ready for our family feast on November 20th. In math, we will continue to work on addition and subtraction, focusing on finding missing parts of a whole. Reading will continue to focus on strategies for solving tricky words. This November will be something to be thankful for here at Page!
Holiday Meal
On November 20th, we will be having our annual Thanksgiving meal for families and guests. For each of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday meals, one grade level eats in our school cafeteria with families and guest. The other grade level eats in classrooms. We ask that parents and guests do not come on the day that their student’s class is not eating in the cafeteria. First grade families and guests will be joining us for the Thanksgiving meal. Kindergarten families and guests will be joining us for the Christmas meal. In addition, we do ask for no outside food on this day.
Media Center Update
I would like to give a big THANK YOU to all the family members who volunteered at the Book Fair and for all your support! We were able to raise $1,700!! These funds will be utilized to continue to meet the technology needs of our school. We have some exciting plans in place that will be shared at a later date.
In Library classes, we continue to discuss our four library rules, we call them our “READ Rules”.
R Respect the library materials
E Everything has a correct place
A Always Share
D Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You (The Golden Rule)
Our primary focus has moved on to READ Rule A, Always Share. Kindergarten students have been discussing the importance of sharing all the library materials and even made two bookmarks, one to keep and one to share with someone else. First grade students have been using centers and sharing all the materials as well. An aspect of sharing that I have gone over with both grade levels is the importance of sharing all the books. When a student checks out a book, it is important that they return the book so that other students have an opportunity to read that book. When students have overdue books, it means that no one else in our school is able to read that book. Please help your child in remembering to return their library book each week, so that they are able to get a new book AND so that other children have the opportunity to read the book they had. If a student forgets their book or is absent during library time, there are multiple times throughout the week to get a new book.
Additionally, we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our first shipment of books purchased with the funds raised through the Dance-A-Thon fundraiser! I hope to have many exciting pictures to share in the next few weeks of our deliveries!
Guidance Corner
We are plugging right along with the 1st nine weeks already behind us. I am always available so feel free to reach out to me any time during the year via email and/or phone.
Did you know that we have a Weekend BackPack Program? If your child is in need of
quick, healthy, easy snacks for the weekends and long breaks from school, we are able to help with that. Please contact Ms. Warren if interested- enrollment is on going although new additions may have to wait until the end of the following month if they enroll past a certain date.
Ms. Warren is also taking referrals for families that may need Assistance for the Holidays. Families are chosen based on need and based on number of sponsors available. A referral or an application does not guarantee that you will receive assistance. If you are receiving assistance elsewhere, please do not apply at Page as there are limited resources available.
We also have applications that are due by the first of December for a Co-Op Christmas Assistance. Please contact Ms. Warren with any questions or if you would like information on this.
I am taking referrals for Session 2 of my Counseling Groups. Topics include:
Social Skill Development
Loss and Grief
Changing Families (including children involved in divorce, non traditional families, being raised by step parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, etc).
Stress and anxiety
If you have a student who would benefit from one of these groups, please contact Ms. Warren. Session 2 groups will be starting after the new year.
What are we talking about in Guidance classes this month?
This month we finish our Digital Citizenship lesson on Digital Responsibility. World Kindness Day is November 13, so we will celebrate this as well. Our character trait for November is Courage, so we will discuss showing courage in various situations (at home, in our community and at school). We will talk about being our “own person” and not being afraid to be ourselves, no matter what our friends chose to do.
Thanks!
Ms. Warren :-)
Congratulations to our October Students of the Month!

In November, students will learn the proper mechanics in running and hopping during PE. Students will continue working on the following: spatial awareness, proper and smooth kinesthetic movements, teamwork, gross and fine motor skills, sportsmanship and throwing and aiming at targets.
Reminder your student must wear tennis/athletic shoes on days he or she has PE.

Artist Corner
Kindergarten will explore COLOR , one of the Elements of Art, by creating a painting that mixes colors together to form new ones by blowing through a straw.

From the Stage
Kindergarten will be working on reviewing what we have learned from the previous months, with steady beat and pitch. We will be working on applying this more in-class with non-pitched and pitched instruments. Of course, we will be singing turkey songs because of Thanksgiving.
First grade continues to roll along with learning songs for the Christmas program. Along with learning the songs, we are learning how to match pitch, sing with clarity, project voice, as well as music elements such as steady beat, and pitch.
