The Manning Weekly Newsletter
September 7, 2018
Dear Families,
We are starting to get into the swing of things. For students and staff, much of the anxiety, which naturally comes with the beginning of a new school year, has given way to a subtle confidence in the vision of what this year has in store for us.
Over the course of these first few weeks, our students have gotten to know their teachers and their teachers' expectations of them - both academically and behaviorally - and they are high all across the board. These clear school expectations complemented with the support they receive at home from you have directly influenced the excellent behavior we have noticed so far. Our students are amazing! They will do whatever we ask of them!
As our "honeymoon" phase starts to blend into the bulk of our school year, it is important we make a concerted effort to keep our bar high. If we maintain lofty expectations, then students will realize we truly do expect the best from them.
We appreciate all the support you are giving our students.

Achievement Time
If your student gets an Achievement Time slip on Thursday afternoon during Access class, it's because they had at least one D or F as of Thursday morning when we run the D/F list, and they are expected to be at Achievement Time the following Wednesday. Sometimes parents login to Parent Portal after school on Thursday and see that their son or daughter actually has a passing grade. That's great! It means either the student submitted an assignment or the teacher added something in the grade book to make the grade go up. If their grade is up to at least a C, then they can get out of Achievement Time. All they have to do is get a signature from that specific teacher indicating they are passing the class with a C.

Monday 9/10 Last Chance to Donate 2-Liter Soda Bottles and Cereal Boxes
As a tight Manning community, we are reaching out to all our families to collect 2-liter soda bottles and cereal boxes. Our 6th grade STEM class is in need of empty, rinsed 2-liter soda bottles for an upcoming design project. If you have any and could donate them to us we would love it. Have your student bring them in to Mrs. Cahill or Mrs. Burg starting on Tuesday after Labor Day weekend. We will collect them up until Monday, September 10. Any 2-liter soda bottles work, but the Coca-Cola ones that have a distinct shape (as shown in the picture to the left) work best! Ms. Burg is also trying to use cereal boxes as a classroom organizer for learning journals. Thank you so much!

Friday, September 21st Will Be an Early Release Friday - School Will Get out at 12:25 pm
Update from Our Staff Meeting Wednesday Afternoon
We also had a couple teachers demonstrate their strategies for "brain breaks" - ways to incorporate some brief physical activity to recharge our students' brains so they can recharge their energy levels and get their brains focused for the rest of the class. This is particularly useful on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when we have hour-and-a-half block periods.
New Class Pet: "Toothless"
Welcome the newest addition to Mrs. Moore's 8th grade science class, Toothless, the bearded dragon! Toothless is a juvenile "beardie", a species native to Australia. The kids are thrilled to have a new class pet to love on and learn from.

At Manning, we strive to live our core values every day.
HONESTY
- Jackson Plichta found a cell phone in the hallway that was dropped by a student and he made sure to pick it up and hand it to a teacher so they could start the process of getting the phone back to the owner.
EFFORT
-
Nevaeh Abeyta comes into tutor time every day. She works hard to advocate for her learning and continues asking questions and trying her best despite being discouraged at times.
Amelia Pennell and Dora Rubin for picking up trash during recess to make our field look nice
Chris Suitt and Spencer Jensen came to tutor time to ask questions about homework, worked together to figure it out, and then taught another student that needed help. Loved seeing them teach something that they didn't understand themselves at first!
ACHIEVEMENT
Trey Fry makes sure he uses his math class time efficiently to ask questions about homework and finish as much of his assignments as possible.
RESPECT
- Keiton Abeyta selflessly held the back door open and waited for every kid to go through on the Friday release of Labor Day.
- Kori Mayfield actively recognizes peers and students who are meaningful to her. She makes sure they feel valued and loved.
TEAMWORK
Nevaeh Abeyta for standing at the front door for five minutes on Tuesday morning and opening it for every student who came in
The Math Department has each others' backs. They make sure everyone is heard and respected, which optimizes their ability to make instruction rigorous and engaging.
Micah Zahn for helping Katy get her lunch when she was on crutches
Ms. Austin for helping us brainstorm ideas for our 6th grade lab. We appreciate your creativity and ideas for materials to use to help us achieve our overall goal!!
