January 2020
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Happy Friday and Welcome to 2020 from Saline High School.
We hope that everyone had an amazing break and excited to journey into the next decade!
Believe it or not, we have already begun the scheduling and planning process for the 20-21 school-year! This past Wednesday, our counseling team met with the Junior class and will be meeting with 9th graders and Sophomore students in the coming weeks. The current 8th graders, that will be incoming 9th graders will have high school orientation on February 4, 2020. Please read below the newly revised schedule change process and online course registration policy.
For the 2020-2021 school year, the following schedule change policies will be in effect:
The only schedule change window for the school year will be the 1st week of the 1st trimester. This is the only opportunity to change a student’s schedule for all three trimesters. Changes will only be made at the start of trimester 2 or trimester 3 for the following reasons:
The student has an incomplete schedule, or
The student has been academically misplaced.
Students will be permitted one schedule change appointment. At that time, the student should address all of their scheduling concerns.
Teacher changes can be made if it benefits class size. (ie. the student is moving into a class that is smaller than the one they are currently in)
Online course requests must be made by June 5, 2020 for the following school year. All online applications will be submitted using the form found on the website or click here.
No online courses may be added after June 5, 2020. As a district, we need to develop our staffing and budget prior to July 1, 2020.
The courses that students choose in the winter dictate which courses we offer and the number of sections of each course we offer. As a result, students should take great seriousness and care in choosing their classes.
When students want to change their schedule at the beginning of each trimester, it can cause inequity and an adversarial relationship. We are often asked to change the class “just for my student.” Others would be justifiably angry if they found out we made changes for some students but not others.
Counselors frequently receive requests from students to have a different teacher. This practice is not only unfair to staff but to students as well. All of the teachers at Saline High School have met a rigorous process prior to becoming part of our staff. In addition, we pride ourselves on having a dedicated and committed group of teachers. We encourage students to work with all their teachers to manage their way through adversity that might arise in class. Certainly, in their higher education experiences and work experiences, students will be faced with instructors or employers who aren’t a perfect fit. Now is a good time to manage through these roadblocks with the help and support of all the individuals they have as their resources at SHS.
Have a great month and Go Hornets!

10 Reasons Teens Have So Much Anxiety Today
As certain societal norms and expectations shift, the amount of anxiety teens face increases. The pressure to be perfect, the fear of failure, and the constant concern of how they appear in the eyes of their peers are all anxiety-inducing stressors that are incorporated into young people's lives.
Psychology Today outlines 10 reasons anxiety has increased in teens:
- Electronics provide an unhealthy way to fill time. Using games or social media to avoid boredom or sadness does not give a young person the ability to learn to cope in these situations.
- Happiness is always the goal. Parents strive to have their children happy. In response, when a kid feels down, the kid feels like it is not normal to feel that way.
- Parents give unrealistic praise to children. Pushing a child to believe they are the best creates pressures that can be unattainable.
- Parents put to much pressure on teens. From SAT courses, to multiple sports, to private tutors, parents ingrain in young people's minds that staying busy and being the best is the only way to be successful or get into college.
- Young people are not learning how to manage their emotions. In light of all the pressures to succeed, kids aren't being taught how to manage stress which makes them ill-prepared for when stressors like college come into their lives.
- Parents feel the need to protect rather than guide, which leads to overprotectiveness and the belief that the kid cannot manage life on their own.
- Not learning to face their fears. If something causes anxiety, frequently parents will not expose their kid to whatever is causing the fear. In reality exposure is a vital coping strategy.
- Parents use their own anxieties to affect the way they raise their children. Feeling guilty by saying no to a child and giving in or not letting a child go to something because it makes the parent nervous can affect how the child views discomfort.
- Too much structure in a young person's life limits the amount of free time they have to think, be creative, and manage things on their own.
- Kids want to be led by their parents, but in a way that is healthy and influential; not controlling.
