Red Storm Forecast
Stonybrook Middle School February 2019
Message from Mr. Day
Hello Stonybrook Middle School Families!
Welcome to the February edition of our Red Storm Forecast Newsletter! We are just coming out of our polar vortex and look forward to the warmer weather that is predicted to start the month! This part of the year tends to be a challenge for many of us as we work through the cold and dark hours of the winter. But soon, the weather will begin to warm up and the promise of another spring will be upon us.
In this newsletter you will find some additional information about our Tyler Parent Portal. This is a wonderful resource for staying connected to your child's performance. For every parent who logs into the Parent Portal in the month of February, you will get your name put in a drawing for a gift. You will get an entry for each login to the portal that has at least 5 minutes of activity.
An area of academic support we are in most significant need is holding students accountable to the quality completion and on-time submission of their assignments. Assignments are intended to provide feedback to both student and teacher to guide instruction that is best aligned to the student's needs. Without this information, it is much more challenging to academically support a student effectively.
Parents/Guardians who stay actively engaged in their child's academic process play a critical component of the student - parent - teacher collaboration triangle that is necessary to ensure each student has the best opportunity to realize his/her growth potential.
Go Red Storm!
Mr. Nathan Day
A word from our Assistant Principal, Ms. True
Starting a new year and starting a new semester gives us the opportunity to reflect on our goals and even set some new ones. Establishing a routine helps us to meet our goals. Here are some suggestions to establish a routine to keep good attendance: Give yourself and children enough time to get ready. No video games on school mornings. Set alarm clock 30 minutes earlier for students who need more time to get ready for school. Plan ahead the night before: such as identifying and pre-prepping breakfast, have kids choose clothes and shoes the night before, and pack their backpacks with completed homework. Set a regular bedtime schedule. Age should be a factor. Have kids bathe or shower in the evening. Create a special folder for completed assignments. Provide regular study times and a quiet, clean area for doing homework. Have your child walk to school or the bus stop with another child who is always on time.
Take care of yourself and stay healthly!

December's Model Attendees
Welcome Mr. Gamble!
Ron Gamble taught seventh grade science at Tindley Accelerated Schools, prior to joining the Stonybrook team. Mr. Gamble earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication studies from the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts, Master of Arts degree in public relations management from the Indiana University School of Journalism and currently is working toward a Graduate Certificate in nonprofit management in the Indiana University School of Environmental and Public Affairs.
Mr. Gamble desires to challenge the thinking of our students toward scientific research while exploring the possibilities of a career in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields and higher education. There is a high demand in the STEM areas (there is an even higher demand for people of color to fill those positions). If our students are interested, He wants to ensure they are equipped and knowledgeable.
A few fun facts about Mr. Gamble:
He was once known as a rap artist by the name of Real Game. Mr. Gamble also had an online radio show, as well as a monthly entertainment article in the monthly Scoop publication. In his free time, he like drawing, weight-lifting, playing basketball and working with his wife, Karen, in their Speak the Word Bible Study (online church) ministry.
Congratulations to our December Students of the month!
