St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 3 | WEEK 8 | 9 SEPTEMBER 2021
Holy Mary, mother fair, filled with love for God,
Pray for us in all our needs.
Pray for us today.
From the Principal
Dear St Columba’s school community,
What a glorious week of sunshine. I hope everyone has taken the opportunity to be outside and enjoy this weather!
This week is National Child Protection Week. The theme this year is ‘Every child, in every community, needs a fair go’. To treat all of Australia’s children fairly, we need to make sure every family and community have what children need to thrive and be healthy. Child Protection Week is a great opportunity to have the discussion with your children about the importance of turning words into actions, following in the steps of St Joseph, to ensure all children thrive, be healthy and to create great communities for all children.
A big thank you to the P&F for a wonderful Father’s Day Breakfast. It was great to see so many dads, grandfathers and father figures at school for the breakfast and liturgy and enjoying time with their children. I really enjoyed watching the dads and grandfathers making kites with the Year 2 classes and hearing comments along the lines of ‘that was the best morning ever’ was magical!
Last week saw the conclusion of the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. The Catholic Performing Arts Festival is a major event that all Catholic schools participate throughout Term 3. The countdown is now on to the 2021 Spirit of the Arts Festival and there is much to look forward to. With more than 1,500 students from Catholic schools across our state coming together at Perth’s RAC Arena next Monday, the Festival Concert is set to be a spectacular celebration of music, dance, and performance. The concert will be hosted by former Mary’s Mount Primary School and Trinity College student turned Channel 7 presenter, Tim McMillan. The packed program will feature bands, instrumentalists, singers, and dancers for the culmination of the week-long Performing Arts Festival. 32 school choirs will participate in massed choir performances, with schools unable to attend in person featured in a compilation video. If you are keen to attend this event, the program for the week’s festivities is now online at https://www.spiritofthearts.com.au/program-of-events/ and tickets are available through Ticketek.
On Wednesday, September 8 we recognise the Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Mary’s birthday! God’s gift of His Son to humankind was proceeded by another precious gift, the gift of the Mother of His Son. The Bible says nothing about Mary’s birth, only that the angel found her living in Nazareth in Galilee. Tradition tells us that Anna and Joachim are Mary’s parents. For staff this year, we celebrated this day with a lovely staff Mass held in the church. It was truly a reverent way to start the day.
Finally, I would like to share the exciting news that Mrs Melissa Govorko and her husband Matt will be welcoming their first child in 2022. On behalf of the school community, I would like to wish them all the best as they enter the next chapter of their lives.
Wishing everyone a lovely weekend!
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
September 8, is the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary — Mary’s birthday! God’s gift of His Son to humankind was preceded by another precious gift — the gift of the Mother of His Son.
Mary brought forth Jesus into the world. In this modern world, each and every follower of Jesus is also invited to “bring forth” Jesus into the world, in his or her life situation.
The Bible says nothing about Mary’s birth, only that the angel found her living in Nazareth in Galilee. Traditions about her birth rely on the 2nd-century apocryphal book Protoevangelium of James, which makes her the miracle child of aging childless parents, Anna and Joachim, born “in the ninth month” in an unspecified location.
